Though this one hits a lot of my book challenges for this year- #Booked2018 (POC Author), #ReadingWomenChallenge (fantasy novel written by a woman of color), #1AMonthChallenge - and I had high hopes for it (the premise! the cover!!), ultimately, this one disappointed me. The nonstop action leaves little room for deeper character development and the fantasy world building holds promise but not enough time spent delivering on that angle, either... I

Almost linked short stories rather than a novel, this is a gritty and unapologetic look at colonialism, slavery, and 300 years of black history in both Ghana and the US as played out in two diverging branches of one family.
