The Path to the Spiders' Nests
The Path to the Spiders' Nests | Italo Calvino
11 posts | 34 read | 11 to read
Pin is a bawdy, adolescent cobbler's assistant, both arrogant and insecure who - while the Second World War rages - sings songs and tells jokes to endear himself to the grown-ups of his town - particularly jokes about his sister, who they all know as the town's 'mattress'. Among those his sister sleeps with is a German sailor, and Pin dares to steal his pistol, hiding it among the spiders' nests in an act of rebellion that entangles him in the adults' war.

1. I think it was The Path to the Spiders‘ Nests by Italo Calvino.
2. Unfortunately, no. I can only read English.

Here I am reading Calvino's preface to his first novel, and pages later I keep returning to the same sentence because there is something of truth in it that tugs at me.

"But when you are young every new book you read is like a new eye which opens on to the world and which modifies the viewpoint of the other eyes or book-eyes which you had before..."

Ericalambbrown I honestly find this to be true even now. And young I am no longer. 😂 👵 5y
cassareada @Ericalambbrown yes, and to be honest we should look at the world differently after reading any type of book because there is such to learn and take from each book we come across. 5y

#BookReport

I've finished the tagged book, Clear Horizon (in Pilgrimage), Song of Solomon, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers, Faces and Masks.

I am, of course, still reading the rest of Pilgrimage, Century of the Wind, and Anniversaries. I'm also reading Her Body and Other Parties.

BarbaraBB You read a lot during the baking! What did you think of Grief? 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pin is a little 💩 but somehow manages to be an endearing one. 😂 Some of his antics ended up making this book much funnier than I had expected it to be. I loved the writing, and the excellent preface (also written by Calvino) had me sold on the book before I‘d even truly started it.

One of my friends gifted me this book along with two other books by Calvino and now I‘m even more excited to get to them.

My first Calvino and I wasn't really captured by the story or the characters. The beginning and the end, however, made up for the middle part, which I think was pretty boring. #1001books

A new-to-me book store in the middle of Angloland, that actually carries books in French! Bought two. So excited!

octobre Funny. I live in francoland and struggle to find English bookstores! 8y
tournevis @octobre Depending where in Francoland, it's a little easier than the reverse, in my experience. 8y
