Fire Boy
Fire Boy | Sami Shah
From Sami Shah comes Fire Boy, an urban fantasy set in modern-day Pakistan, where djinns roam the street alongside corrupt cops, hustling beggars, and creatures from the darkest corners of Islamic mythology. Growing up in Karachi isnt easy. Wahid has a lot on his mind: the girl he likes, mostly, but also choosing a good university and finding time to play Dungeons & Dragons. Oh, and the fact that he can see djinns, other-worldly creatures made of a smokeless and scorching fire. After a horrific car accident kills his best friend and djinns steal his girlfriends soul, Wahid vows to find out why. Fortunately, he has help in finding the djinns that tried to kill him. Unfortunately, that help is from the darkest of all spirits, the Devil himself Fire Boy is filled with supernatural entities and high-paced action, but it also gives the reader a vivid insight into life in Pakistan. Praise for Fire Boy by Sami Shah Bold, compelling fantasy with a truly original setting. Saladin Ahmed Sami Shah blends the tenderness of Octavia Butler with the supernatural folklore of Nalo Hopkinson. His characters human and otherwise are skilfully drawn, and the vibrant streets of Karachi are vividly brought to life. Fire Boy is an eloquent imagination explosion. Maxine Beneba Clarke I was enchanted by the lyrical and atmospheric prose Sami Shah brings the streets of Karachi to life with a deft hand, ancient folklore colliding with the modern internet age. What an exciting read! I loved getting a Pakistani POV on djinn in the modern world and the notion that everyone has a djinn story. Wahid's bumbling was a terrific way to provide that insight, and the host of supporting characters were in turns delightful and terrifying. As the first book in a duology, it leaves you on a cliffhanger, and I, for one, can't wait to continue the adventure. #booktober #supernaturalbeings

'Tis the season for good beers and lazy nights. I hereby proclaim that 4 Hands Absence of Light holds medicinal purposes so I can beat this bug and do some proper Halloweening this weekend. Not a bad pair with a djinn book. #booksandbrews

Oh hey! Want to get a taste of Fire Boy? The book features djinn tales between chapters, and Mahvesh Murad read Interlude C for this week's Midnight in Karachi! (She's how I found out about the book in the first place.) Here's your 8 minute spooky story for the night: http://tinyurl.com/hhvwnob

Is it cool if I recommend a book I'm currently reading? Yes? Cool. Because I am already in love with Fire Boy, a novel about a Pakistani boy who can see djinn. It's funny and dangerous and totally doable after Bird Box scared me off more outright horror for the remainder of the month. After reading about possessions and attacks at lunch, I'm glad I wore my hamsa shirt. #recommendsday

DebinHawaii The book sounds great and love the shirt! 👍😀 8y
