Being Dead
Being Dead: A Novel | Jim Crace
A haunting new novel about love, death, and the afterlife, from the author of QuarantineBaritone Bay, mid-afternoon. A couple, naked, married almost thirty years, are lying murdered in the dunes."Their bodies had expired, but anyone could tell--just look at them--that Joseph and Celice were still devoted. For while his hand was touching her, curved round her shin, the couple seemed to have achieved that peace the world denies, a period of grace, defying even murder. Anyone who found them there, so wickedly disfigured, would nevertheless be bound to see that something of their love had survived the death of cells. The corpses were surrendered to the weather and the earth, but they were still a man and wife, quietly resting; flesh on flesh; dead, but not departed yet."

An elder couple lies naked, holding hands and dead in the dunes. They were murdered. What was their story?

A married couple is murdered. Their death and the reclamation of their bodies by nature is described in intimate detail.

I really liked this one a lot more than I thought I would. While the premise is very different than my still favorite Crace book, Quarantine, I love the way he took the murder of a couple and turned the story into something completely unexpected. One warning though, being about death there are many references to decomposition💀

Libby1 Have you read Harvest? It is the only book I've read by Crace so far and I will definitely read his work again. 8y

Well, stuck in a ditch on the side of a road in the middle nowhere waiting for a tow. At least I have books to read.
