The Young Visiters
The Young Visiters | Daisy Ashford
4 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
The Young Visiters(1919) is a short society novel written by Miss Daisy Ashford at the age of nine. Its child's view of high society (dukes and earls having levies and residing in the Crystall Palace) and its heavily romantic plot make it an engaging and enduring popular work.

Daisy Ashford was a nine-year-old who read too many overwrought Victorian love stories when she wrote this unintentionally hilarious novella in 1890. She rediscovered the manuscript as an adult and was encouraged to publish it (with idiosyncratic spelling intact) in 1919 and it was an immediate hit. JM Barrie (author of Peter Pan) wrote the introduction and it later became a successful play.

A definite pick! 😆

Written by a 9-year-old in 1890, and that's pretty much all you need to know.

"Young Visiters" (sic) was written by Daisy Ashford when she was 9 and is published with a foreword by J.M. Barrie. It is a very quick and funny read, full of spelling mistakes and available at Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21415/21415-h/21415-h.htm

LeahBergen I need to read this! 👍🏼 8y
zsuzsanna_reads It took me less than an hour, with various interruptions. 8y
zsuzsanna_reads They made this into a BBC drama in the early 2000s. There are some fun clips on YouTube but the whole thing appears unavailable ☹️ 8y
