“In that little party there was not one of us who would desert another; yet we were of different countries, different colours, different races, different religions—and one of us was of a different world.”

“The one on whom all responsibility rests is apt to endure the most”
There's virtually no preamble, Burroughs just catapults Carter into the heart of the adventure and you, dear reader, better catch your breath and try to keep up with the mightiest warrior Mars has ever known!
The previous book ended on a cliffhanger and, fair warning, so does this one: best have the first three books gathered together if this is your initial voyage to the dead sea bottoms of Barsoom. 👇🏼
"Leave to a Thark his head and one hand and he may yet conquer."
- The Book of Barsoomian Proverbs
"We are between the wild thoat of certainty and the mad zitidar of fact - we can escape neither."
- The Tao of Tars Tarkas
[I wish this book existed!]
From 007 junk food, to ERB comfort food...
I read the edition on the left, with it's risqué Deja Thoris cover, in the mid-70s when I was at school, but it's become a little too fragile to re-read, so it's the early-80s edition on the right, with its risqué John Carter cover, that I'm going to now.
I love Michael Whelan's cover art for these Del Rey editions; he did his research meticulously.
While I didn't like this book as much as the first one, Princess of Mars, It was still a great read. At times I had chills and admittedly, cried once or twice. There was definitely more lulls in the action in this book but I enjoyed the intermingling of the Martian's mythology and the surprise of several new cultures. While it wasn‘t my favorite I still cant wait to read the next book! #beachbook #vacationread
