Goldsworthy seems to have established himself as the pre-eminent popular writer on Roman history and I suggest the title is well earned. His work is well researched, accessible and he is not afraid to admit that some issues remain unclear and that he does not have all the answers. Not the most exciting writer but still highly recommended,
