Chasing Embers has an interesting premise supported by top notch world building. It did feel a little long in places and I felt that there could have been more time spent on relationship development between the characters. Overall it was a good read and I'm looking forward to reading more.

I'm all out of Rivers of London books and am looking for something similar. This came up in "Customers also bought..." so I've got a kindle sample to try, but had anyone read it? Or does anyone have suggestions to fill the Peter Grant-shaped hole in my reading life? #recommendations #readalikes #ifyoulikethattrythis

This has a fantastic premise, but at 72% done (according to my Kindle), I just can't be bothered to finish it. My reading time is short and I have SO MANY other books I want to read, and I can't be bothered to force my way through something that has so utterly lost my interest. I don't care about Ben, Rose, Atiya or what the resolution of the plot is going to be.

James Bennett's urban fantasy novel (the first in a new series) draws heavily on English folklore and African myth to build a rich fantasy world but it can't make up for leaden writing, a main character who bumbles from trap to trap without any sense of agency and an underwritten love interest reduced to complaining and being used as bait.
