Ghost Empire | Richard Fidler

'A brilliant reconstruction of the saga of power, glory, invasion and decay that is the one-thousand year story of Constantinople. A truly marvellous book.' - Simon Winchester In 2014, Richard Fidler and his son Joe made a journey to Istanbul. Fired by Richard's passion for the rich history of the dazzling Byzantine Empire - centred around the legendary Constantinople - we are swept into some of the most extraordinary tales in history. The clash of civilizations, the fall of empires, the rise of Christianity, revenge, lust, murder. Turbulent stories from the past are brought vividly to life at the same time as a father navigates the unfolding changes in his relationship with his son. GHOST EMPIRE is a revelation: a beautifully written ode to a lost civilization, and a warmly observed father-son adventure far from home. Richard Fidler presents CONVERSATIONS WITH RICHARD FIDLER, an in-depth, up close and personal interview program broadcast across Australia on ABC Radio. He's interviewed prime ministers, astronauts, writers and scientists, but the program often features remarkable people who are unknown to the wider world. The program is the most popular podcast in Australia, with over a million downloaded programs every month. In another life Richard was a member of Australian comedy trio The Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS), which played to audiences all over the world. This is his first book. 'A brilliant reconstruction of the saga of power, glory, invasion and decay that is the one-thousand year story of Constantinople. A truly marvellous book.' Simon Winchester

26-30 Jul 23 (audiobook)
Not sure why I chose this, but it was well-researched, if a little repetitive, and Richard Fidler is an amicable guide (who I was previously only familiar with as one of the DAAS) through this period of history. I knew little of the Byzantine empire and do feel more informed at the end. Not a period I could imagine reading up on further - there seemed to be a lot of palace intrigue, war and blood.

CarolynM Fidler‘s become a radio presenter on the ABC doing serious interviews on a program called Conversations. I believe it‘s available as a podcast, if you‘re interested. (edited) 1y
mjtwo @CarolynM I might. He comes across as a lovely person (and a very good father). 1y

Excellent book. I had no clue what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. It‘s more of a story rather than history of Constantinople ribboned with a father/son trip and real life. Fidler pulled off an entertaining and enlightening read. I hope to see the Ghost Empire some day for myself!

282Mikado I visited Istanbul back in the 80's. It will be interesting to read up on it's history. 4y
Dostoyes @282Mikado Fidler is selective in his history and partial to the threads on culture and empire building - but in that thesis he weaves a very tight and compelling narrative. My mom has been to Istanbul many times and is reading it now - she‘s enjoying it too. 4y

A part travelogue, part history as Richard Fidler (Ann Australian radio personality) explores Istanbul with his son and discusses the highlights of Byzantine history. Not a comprehensive history ( see JJ Norwich for this) of the Eastern Roman Empire, but a page turner describing the highs and lows of this little known empire which lasted until the 15th century and which for much of its time was the point of assimilation between Europe and the East

History is fascinating, but reading non fiction about it can be dry and boring, let's be real.

BUT Richard Fidler is not a historian, he is a consummate storyteller. He knows how to spin a yarn, how to insert just enough of himself into it, and how to change course just when you're starting to tire of hearing about Yet Another Battle.

If anyone has recs for other great books set in the Byzantine Empire, I'm all ears!

Bluebird I've read little about this time period (bad me). This book looks wonderful. Adding to my ever growing stack. Thanks! 7y
Marchpane @Bluebird I was the same! This book is a good primer - it zips over a 1000 years pretty quickly 😊 7y

Marchpane @Andrew65 Thanks! Have you read any of these? 7y
Andrew65 @Marchpane I like my historical fiction and have read a lot of books about Roman history, but not read any books about the Byzantine Empire. I need to address this and will be making plans to read some of these next year. This one sounds interesting and I may target it first, 7y
Marchpane @Andrew65 that one does look good & I am going to have fun trawling through that list for more! Cheers 👍 7y
Bluebird Looking forward to this one. Also appreciate the great list @Andrew65 7y
Andrew65 @Marchpane Likewise 😊 7y
Cathythoughts Yes ok find non fiction hard going. But a good story teller I like. I‘m stacking 🙏 7y

I was a little stumped by the #underground prompt, but this one suits nicely. This is a delightful history of the Byzantine empire combined with Fidler's journey through the modern spaces with his son, looking for the historical beneath the surface.

It's taking all my control not to jump straight into this book after hearing the author talk about it! If the book is half as engaging to read as he was to listen to it's going to be brilliant. Also picked myself up this super cute Moleskin book journal.

Now Nobooktober starts in earnest!

LauraJ Nobooktober?!? 🙀 8y
BookishFeminist I'm with @LauraJ ! What is this Nobooktober madness?! 8y
Sue @LauraJ @BookishFeminist Nobooktober is my gallant effort to get my TBR under control - no purchases or Netgalley requests at all for the rest of the month. 😳 8y

Pretty stoked I'm able to get along to see Richard Fidler talk about his new book on Oct 2. (He was a member of one of my favourite comedy trios when I was a teen, so I'll be the one fangirling in the corner.)

EnidBiteEm I ❤️ his podcasts. 8y
