I love biographies of writers, esp early 20th century, and I loved this - but it won‘t be everyone‘s jam. Dunn gets most of her material from Angela and Daphne‘s autobiographies and letters, there is very little on Jeanne - even so it is fascinating to see how the sisters stories play out from their cosseted and privileged, yet strangely cold childhoods through to adulthood, careers, WW2 and so MANY love affairs.

Centique If you like biographies and the thorough examination of themes in a creative life you might enjoy it too. The paintings are by Dod Procter - a friend of the du Mauriers- I fell down a rabbit hole looking up various authors, actors and artists they knew! 5y
batsy I love those paintings. And the bio definitely sounds like my jam! I see I already have it stacked 🙂 5y
Cathythoughts I‘m not big on biographies... but you have made me want to read this one 👍🏻✨stacked 5y

erzascarletbookgasm Sounds good, and I love the cover & paintings. 5y
LeahBergen I think I‘d like this one. Stacked! 👏🏻👏🏻 5y
Centique @LeahBergen oh good - yes I think you would like it too! There are better biographies of Daphne I think, but is is interesting contrasting her life and her choices with her sisters. Such a fascinating time in the world with women breaking free from traditional roles too! 5y
Centique @batsy @Cathythoughts I think I like biographies more than memoirs because they‘re less emotional and more analytical. I‘m often happier taking a “helicopter view” of a person from history - than I am feeling right in the thick of things. So that‘s just a caveat Cathy in case it‘s a bit dry!! 😂 5y
Centique @erzascarletbookgasm this painter (of the flowers) Dod Procter did some amazing portraits of women too - I‘m shocked I hadn‘t heard of her before. 5y

Ahhhh, any one else slowly getting disheartened by Instagram and it‘s horrendous algorithm?! I‘ve noticed that the number of likes/engagement has really slid on my personal account and the one for work (which many people contribute to) I thought this photo was pretty good but it‘s sitting on a measly 12 likes at the moment... #instagramrant

Mehso-so

It seemed appropriate to review this given next month's @TheSpinecrackersBookClub pick, and the fact that much of du Maurier's work references Cornwall. I'd love to visit Cornwall, but this biography again, not so much. One for the fans. Littens, have you ever been to Cornwall? Was it amazing? #septphotochallenge #somethingforseptember #bookbythesea

rubyslippersreads Sorry you didn't like this more, because I already bought it. 🙁 8y
EnidBiteEm @rubyslippersreads 😔Are you a fan? Maybe you will like it more than I did, and may write a review to balance my panning of it. Or maybe it will be a double pan! 8y
rubyslippersreads @EnidBiteEm I'm a fan and have read (and liked) other books about the DuMauriers, so I'll give it a chance. 😀 8y

EnidBiteEm If it all turns out badly, at least it makes a pretty book for your shelves 😂 8y
EnidBiteEm @rubyslippersreads Or as a coaster, if it goes really badly. 8y
