I‘m at the beginning of the book, but Reading Jackie will appeal to people who are book lovers & fans of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.I like how it‘s focused not on her fashion nor the men whom she married, but on who Jackie was as a women. A women who loved of words 🤍
“This book celebrates the accomplishments of a woman whose editorial talents have never been sung .” -#WilliamKuhn #ReadingJackie

I have never heard Wide Sargasso Sea and have not read any of these. But if they were Jackie O‘s favorites, I may need to check them out!

Pickpick

Insightful bio on Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who loved books & was an editor for the last part of her life. Although her name obviously got her foot in the publishing world‘s doors, she took her job seriously. Enjoyed reading about this aspect of Jackie. She favored editing coffee-table type of books, but a few others (pictured here) I‘ve read. A list of her editing projects is in the back. 👍 if you like books about books and bios.

Cathythoughts Interesting 👍🏻💕 7y
RebL That is a good read. I am thankful that she read books In French, in which there is a smaller translation gap. Such a small portion of World Lit is translated to English and she‘s responsible for boosting our stats. She brought us Naguib Mahfouz. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Cathythoughts it was interesting indeed. I liked the focus on books, rather than her men or clothes (although these get brief mentions). 7y
ValerieAndBooks @RebL Absolutely! And I‘m glad you mentioned Mahfouz — I‘ve read him and his Cairo trilogy, but I don‘t own the latter three. She tried to be quiet about which books she edited because she found that the focus would turn to her rather than the book/author. I had no knowledge of which books she edited until reading this. 7y

In 1976, after being widowed twice, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis began her career as an editor for publishing businesses; Viking, then Doubleday. Though she loved being private, looking at all the books she helped write and their authors, you can get a sense of who she was.

Jackie was the editor for this bio on Tsar Nicholas II — I own/read this one, and always have thought the cover photo is so haunting.

LeahBergen I‘ve read this one and yes ... what a haunting cover photo. 7y

Struggling with Hawksmoor; taking a break from it to start this recent used-book find. Jackie was smart and well-read all her life, and was an editor for the last 20 years or so of her life. As First Lady she began the work of founding a White House Library. A lot of people (such as Onassis, but not the also-bookish John F Kennedy) felt she read too much. I think a lot of us Littens can identify with Jackie except for the wealth and fame 🙂.

Leftcoastzen Reads too much..🤔🤓 7y
LeahBergen Cool! 7y
LisaJo I once read an article that quoted her as saying something to the effect of all I need are my books. #Soulmates Well, except, of course, for the wealth and lifestyle. 7y

Leftcoastzen love Jackie ! Renaissance woman. She was instrumental in saving Grand Central Station. 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Wow!! Can‘t wait to hear your review on this one!! 7y
GatheringBooks i struggled so much with hawksmoor too, so i can totally relate. :) 7y
Reviewsbylola Wow, I had no idea she was an avid reader!! 7y
Verity This sounds fascinating- I have a love hate relationship with the Kennedy axis - but Jackie is someone I still want to know more about. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen I thought of you when it said she was fascinated by the Romanovs along with Russian folktales 😊 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen yes, this mentions briefly her role in saving Grand Central Station and that it meant a lot to her. As for reading too much, it also says that she‘d read on Onassis‘s yacht when everyone else went to take naps! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m finding this so fascinating so far. She worked as a part-time editor, which some people resented, but her salary was only $10,000 a year when she started in 1975. Probably average for that time actually, but for someone with her background it was small change. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @GatheringBooks Hawksmoor is hurting my head 😂! But I won‘t give up on it just yet. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Reviewsbylola I think the times, especially during the White House years, really downplayed bookish traits for her and women in general too. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Verity I know exactly what you mean, I feel the same way about them. But Jackie wasn‘t a Kennedy by blood 😊 and really she didn‘t identify much with them — they were mostly loud and boisterous, while she was introverted and wanted to be with her books. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LisaJo From what I‘m reading so far I can totally believe she would say something like that 💖📚! 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Wow!! That‘s interesting!! 7y
DivineDiana Someone removed my name from the Library reserve list for Hawksmoor! I had been #2 and had to redo my reserve and now am #11! Complained in person but was told it must have been done at another branch. 😬 7y
ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana ugh!! They should have moved you back up to the top of the holds list 😡. 7y
Verity @ValerieAndBooks that sounds good. I‘ll admit most of the stuff I‘ve read around the family has been Kennedy focussed, rather than the people that married in or were around them. 7y
Suet624 Read too much! That‘s outrageous! 7y

1. Average 2-3 per month 📚
2. Both
3. A light, breezy selection...usually on the shorter side (for momentum). OR settle in with a re-read of a favorite!
4. Goal: 25 Currently at: 31! 🙌🏼
5. Never say never, but rarely straight science fiction.
6. Whatever is at hand.
7. A lot. 🙂
8. A whole lot more. 😬😜
9. I've gone to more New Kids on the Block shows as an adult than I did as a kid! What can I say?! 🤷🏻‍♀️😜🎶

I don't have a great reading spot where I live but I have a Pinterest board full of inspiration for someday! This one is Jackie Kennedy Onassis' library in New York. #booksandnooks #BacktoReading (Also the book I tagged is an interesting read.) @Tiffy_Reads

BibliophileMomma I do too!! I love to dream about my own awesome library area 7y
MallenNC @Tiffy_Reads I'm sure we're not the only ones! Most of mine involve floor to ceiling shelves or window seats. It's fun to daydream. 7y
Graciouswarriorprincess I don't have a library or reading room. It's fun to dream. 😉 7y
