Future rock star or friendless misfit? Thats no choice at all. In this acclaimed novel, twelve-year-old Apple grapples with being different; with friends and backstabbers; and with following her dreams. Publishers Weekly called Blackbird Fly a true triumph, and the Los Angeles Times Book Review said, Apple soars like the eponymous blackbird of her favorite Beatles song.Apple has always felt a little different from her classmates. She and her mother moved to Louisiana from the Philippines when she was little, and her mother still cooks Filipino foods and chastises Apple for becoming too American. When Apples friends turn on her and everything about her life starts to seem weird and embarrassing, Apple turns to music. If she can just save enough to buy a guitar and learn to play, maybe she can change herself. It might be the music that saves her . . . or it might be her two new friends, who show her how special she really is. Erin Entrada Kelly deftly brings Apples conflicted emotions to the page in her debut novel about family, friendship, popularity, and going your own way. A must-read for those kids cringing at their own identities.Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books.

A great middle grade book that navigates racism, bullying and friendships. Apple finds a way to fit in through her love of Beatles‘ music and by finding out who her true friends are. A great lesson about silent bystanders as well. 👍🏼

My kids and I got to say hi to Erin Entrada Kelly today and get their books signed. The author gave a talk and spoke about growing up Filipino in Louisiana in the 80‘s. So happy my kids can read about a Filipino American protagonist and see themselves represented in literature for middle schoolers. @Chelleo check out Hello Universe too

This very grown-up looking person is my first baby (9). She‘s growing up so quickly lately.

I want to go back in time and tell my younger self to read this. This is the kind of thoughtful and yet wonderful book I wish I'd read. It is so effective in its portrayal of both racism and bullying in school. And yet it manages to provide a picture of hope: The sanctuary of good friends and the comfort that can be found in music. What I felt was particularly strong was the portrayal of silent standers-by, without necessarily judging people.

Oh if I had a dollar for every time I heard this. I guess I better start practicing because I will probably be saying the same thing to my young ones. Here's to sounding like my mother.

Wonderful book about a middle school student trying to fit in. Though it also reminds me that you couldn't pay me to relive those days.
