Cute
A great middle grade book that navigates racism, bullying and friendships. Apple finds a way to fit in through her love of Beatles‘ music and by finding out who her true friends are. A great lesson about silent bystanders as well. 👍🏼

My kids and I got to say hi to Erin Entrada Kelly today and get their books signed. The author gave a talk and spoke about growing up Filipino in Louisiana in the 80‘s. So happy my kids can read about a Filipino American protagonist and see themselves represented in literature for middle schoolers. @Chelleo check out Hello Universe too
#middlegrade story about a Filipino American 6th grade girl navigating middle school. I loved it!
This very grown-up looking person is my first baby (9). She‘s growing up so quickly lately.
I want to go back in time and tell my younger self to read this. This is the kind of thoughtful and yet wonderful book I wish I'd read. It is so effective in its portrayal of both racism and bullying in school. And yet it manages to provide a picture of hope: The sanctuary of good friends and the comfort that can be found in music. What I felt was particularly strong was the portrayal of silent standers-by, without necessarily judging people.
Oh if I had a dollar for every time I heard this. I guess I better start practicing because I will probably be saying the same thing to my young ones. Here's to sounding like my mother.
Wonderful book about a middle school student trying to fit in. Though it also reminds me that you couldn't pay me to relive those days.
