“I am writing for myself and strangers. This is the only way that I can do it. Everybody is a real one to me, everybody is like some one else too to me. No one of them that I know can want to know it and so I write for myself and strangers.“

Remembering Gertrude Stein on her birthday.

Gertrude's & Alice's passport photos! Amazingly they were both the same height (at least according to their passports) 5'2.5". Gertrude wrote a note that they attached to Alice's passport which stated Alice was her secretary and she lived with her in that capacity. That's kinda like Donald Trump calling everyone's attention to something only to deny what it really is.

Suet624 My great aunt lived with Willa Cather for many years and acted as her secretary. My mother was so upset when she heard people say they were gay. They were definitely fond of each other but not sure if they were lovers. 7y
Hobbinol @Suet624 my goodness you are such an interesting person! I guess we shouldn't leap to conclusions. Does your family have any Cather ephemera? That's so fascinating to me.. (Cather is on my reading list for next year.) 7y

Suet624 @Hobbinol Edith was vilified for having carried out Cather's wishes and destroying letters, diaries, etc. So there's not much to be found. Edith left one of Cather's coats to my mother but it was moth eaten and disintegrating. So no. ☹️ If you're into baseball, I'm also related to Pie Traynor. There was a family feud and the spelling of our last names were changed. 😂 There were lots of family feuds, mostly on the Irish side of my family. 7y
Hobbinol @Suet624 I am into baseball ⚾️❗️Hope to see our local team Sunday. That's really cool! Families do squabble-- that's what makes genealogy so exciting/frustrating! I love these stories and I'm so intrigued by your Aunt! 7y
Suet624 My great aunt's name was Edith Lewis. You can google her. 😁 7y
Hobbinol Thanks! I'll must read her memoir sometime ! That's truly awesome! 7y

#somethingforseptember #septphotochallenge #womenwriters They say she tapped her foot when she wrote and I swear you can hear it in her writing, driving her onward, this great pulse of poetry. Her work reads like an incantation to transform the simple page into Art. No one is more devoted to Art than Stein, man or woman. I couldn't possibly fit all my GS books in a Litsy shot. These are just a few, but they are enough to hear the rhythm of heart.

PurpleyPumpkin Beautiful pic and great overview. Stacked!📚 8y
