Mrs Robinson's Disgrace
Mrs Robinson's Disgrace: The Private Diary of a Victorian Lady | Kate Summerscale
9 posts | 13 read | 16 to read
When the married Isabella Robinson was introduced to the dashing Edward Lane at a party in 1850, she was utterly enchanted. He was 'fascinating', she told her diary, before chastising herself for being so susceptible to a man's charms. But a wish had taken hold of her, and she was to find it hard to shake... In one of the most notorious divorce cases of the nineteenth century, Isabella Robinson's scandalous secrets were exposed to the world. Kate Summerscale brings vividly to life a frustrated Victorian wife's longing for passion and learning, companionship and love, in a society clinging to rigid ideas about marriage and female sexuality.

This book is another that surprised me. Very interesting examination of divorce laws and one woman‘s experience of it. If you are a fan of #nonfiction reads, you may want to give it a read.

#MarchIntoThe70s Day 19: Apparently, there are quite a number of #MrsRobinson themed books I did not know about! 😂🤣📚🧚🏼‍♀️💕

gradcat I didn‘t know about this one...but you know, Mrs. Robinson is such a trope—it‘s no wonder she‘s the subject of a great many books. 6y

Reviewsbylola I loved The Confessions of Mr Whicher but haven‘t been a fan of her other books. @Mdargusch I gave the tagged book one star, if you can believe it. 🙈 6y

"In effect, any woman who reported a powerful impulse..."

Not the first time I've been shocked by the weird attitude of Victorian (western) medicine to women's bodies.

“...desertion must be done against he will of the wife. Divorce could not be consensual...”

Sooo, as long as she DIDN‘T want him to leave her, divorce was okay. But the minute anyone thought she might be happy about it, sorry, no divorce for you!!!

The most f***ed up thing I ever heard.

🤬

A few weeks ago I've got this book and I can't wait to start it. The English title is 'Disgrace. The Private Diary of a Victorian Lady'.
But first I have to read books for my uni courses.

Isabella Robinson diary was used by her husband for the purpose of divorce. The fact that extracts were printed in newspapers was shocking. Her private thoughts and feelings. I can't help but wonder how the Victorians would cope with the oversharing we have nowadays on TV reality shows ☺ I really enjoyed this book
