Come on Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All
Come on Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All | Christina Thompson
5 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
Come On Shore and We Will Kill And Eat You All is a sensitive and vibrant portrayal of the cultural collision between Westerners and Maoris, from Abel Tasman's discovery of New Zealand in 1642 to the author's unlikely romance with a Maori man. An intimate account of two centuries of friction and fascination, this intriguing and unpredictable book weaves a path through time and around the world in a rich exploration of the past and the future that it leads to.

My summary for #foodandlit New Zealand 🇳🇿 - interesting and sometimes surprising insights into a country on the other side of the world. I liked having an American and a German perspective, they made for a good mix commenting on remarkable, funny and sad aspects of the country's culture , history and customs.

As I did not attempt to actually make a pavlova, so I had some extra kiwis this month.🥝🥝🥝

I‘m enjoying and intrigued by this book that mixes New Zealand history with personal memoir.

I listened to quite a bit of it today while walking with Luthien. She‘s got a new tracking collar so she can spend more time off leash, and she very much enjoyed it today.

Daisey I finished this today and agree with many reviews I‘ve seen. It‘s interesting, but although I understand the reason for her own family history, it doesn‘t fit well as it is included. 10mo

This is a mix of memoir, travelogue, and history. The American author uses her experiences in meeting, marrying, and having a family with a Māori man as starting points for chapters on #NewZealand history and Māori culture. It‘s a bit different technique but it works and I feel I learned a lot more than had it been just a book about New Zealand and Māori. The only fail is a chapter in which she describes her own genealogy, which goes so far ⬇️

Texreader off topic it‘s jarring. It feels like it‘s added in for the benefit of her kids and family and I wish she‘d left it as a personal story for them, or an appendix if she was compelled to include it, or even a separate book. #foodandlit #readingOceania (edited) 10mo

Daisey @Texreader Thanks for tagging me! I‘ve been busy and not on Litsy much so I may have missed it. This book definitely sounds fascinating. 10mo
Catsandbooks Yay! 👏🏼 🇳🇿 10mo
Lunakay Awesome review, I totally agree, just finished it too and enjoyed the unique perspective. The detour to her ancestors was a bit off and too long, although because of that I later found myself thinking about the children's cultural identity and how one day they might see themselves and their heritage - especially because they know so much about both sides. 10mo

Texreader @dabbe Right? New Zealand‘s early peoples weren‘t very welcoming unless they wanted dinner it seems. 10mo

This was quite an odd book in some ways. Interesting but the combination of historical analysis and memoir made it feel like a bit of a slog.
