The Weight of a Human Heart
The Weight of a Human Heart | Ryan O'Neill
2 posts | 1 read | 9 to read
Sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, this collection turns the rules of storytelling on their head. A series of graphs illustrates the disintegration of a marriage, step by excruciating step. A literary stoush and an affair play out in the book review section of a national newspaper. The heartbreaking story of a Rwandan boy is hidden within his English exam paper. A young girl learns her mothers disturbing secrets through the broken key on a typewriter. Ranging from Australia to Africa to China and back again, The Weight of a Human Heart heralds a fresh new voice in Australian literature. Stories full of wit, irony, wild invention, love and pain and sometimes shocking power. Paddy OReilly By turns acerbic, playful and serious, ONeill is equally at home with satire and pathos. Cate Kennedy With each new story ONeill redefines the boundaries of what is possible Patrick Cullen

Attempts at making a weekend TBR has been thwarted by the appearance of my cat. Books are her catnip. But I guess that means we were meant for each other right? #catsoflitsy

Somehow I always thought #epistolary referred only to letters or correspondence. Today I learned it can apply to any type of document, eg articles, transcripts etc, used to tell a story.

This collection of short stories plays with various forms, including stories as:

🔹Book reviews in literary magazines
🔹Exam with multi choice & essay sections
🔹Charts and diagrams only
🔹An ESL teacher's class assignments

To name just a few. #readjanuary

Marchpane @mhillis it's really really good! This sort of writing can come off gimmicky, but not in this case. 8y
