This Is Me: A Story of Who We Are and Where We Came from
This Is Me: A Story of Who We Are and Where We Came from | Jamie Lee Curtis
9 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
From the #1 New York Times bestselling creative team of Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell comes a timely picture book about immigration. Raising important identity issues like Where did we come from? and Who are we? This Is Me is as delightful as it is important, sure to stimulate dinner table conversation. In This Is Me a teacher tells her class about her great-grandmother s dislocating journey from home to a new country with nothing but a small suitcase to bring along. And she asks: What would you pack? What are the things you love best? What says This is me! With its lively, rhyming language and endearing illustrations, it s a book to read again and again, imagining the lives of the different characters, finding new details in the art, thinking about what it would be like to move someplace completely different. It s an interactive book, too: Tucked into the back cover is a sturdy pop-up suitcase. And as a younger reader fills the suitcase, he or she learns a lot about what really matters: Now YOU take this case/ and imagine it s true, / that you re leaving and needing/ to choose what says YOU. There is on the one hand a wonderful message here, many Americans are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. But what is so utterly disappointing is Native Americans are invisible, as in entirely absent in this story. How does this continue to happen? I was compelled to make the correction for my daughter after we finished reading it. Sad.

GingerAntics At least you pointed it out to her. I have a feeling most parents don‘t. 5y
Butterfinger Have you seen @Come-read-with-me post? Indigenous children, in 2017, were represented 0.9% of books. In 2018, it rose to 1%. Why is this population still ignored? 5y
alisonrose Yeah, that seems kind of odd to have a book about people immigrating here without talking about the people who were here originally! That‘s disappointing because if it had been more inclusive, it sounds like it would have been a terrific book. 5y

Pickpick

In This is Me, a teacher is explaining how her family came to the United States. This book is written by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell and illustrated by Laura Cornell. She explains to her students that her Grandmother couldn‘t take a lot of items and asks her students what would they take if they had to only back things that can fit into a small suitcase. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 This story is a RF story. All the events in the story could really happen. Although this story is not an award winning book, I think students especially students who came from other countries would enjoy in a read aloud. (edited) 6y
LaGasseSam1996 I think ESOL 24 would be amazing in this story. You can build a whole lesson plan around your students cultures and if they were to travel to another country to live what would they take. 6y
LaGasseSam1996 UDL 9.2 would work in this because it would be their coping skills and strategies that would help students learn about their own cultures and how to determine what they would bring. 6y
DrSpalding What a cool story to incorporate literature and social studies! 6y

I‘m on a business trip and staying in my boss‘s house upstate as it‘s halfway before our destination. It feels like I‘m on a family summer vacation, haha. Too bad we have to have meetings all day tomorrow. But it‘s fun to see her daughter‘s bookshelf in the room I‘m staying in! #shelfie

Reecaspieces I love to look at other peoples books! And I love that it‘s messy....she is a reader! 6y
Kaylamburson Me too!! Shows that it‘s well-loved! @Reecaspieces 6y

Kalalalatja @Evelien in Denmark we don't really have specialized masters, but a more general one, and then you can specialize once you are done with uni. But my interest lie with clinical work and sexual abuse victims. How about you? 😊 8y

This is truly the little bookstore that could. Bookends in Ridgewood NJ manages to host every author coming through NYC, including, this month, Jamie Lee Curtis! #getindie

MrBook Love this one! Been here many, many times. 8y
