Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust | Michael Hingson, Susy Flory
10 posts | 15 read | 15 to read
Faith. Trust. Triumph. Im sorry, the doctor said. He is permanently and totally blind. There is nothing we can do for him. George and Sarah Hingson looked at each other, devastated. Their six-month-old son, Michael was a happy, strawberry blond baby boy, healthy and normal in every way except one. When the Hingsons switched on a light or made silly faces, Michael did not react. Ever. My best suggestion is that you send him to a home for the blind, the doctor continued. He will never be able to do anything for himself. Forty-seven years later, a yellow Labrador retriever puppy was born in the whelping unit of Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California. The puppys name was Roselle. On September 11, 2001, she saved Michaels life. This is Roselles story too. From the Introduction Every moment in Michael Hingsons and Roselles lives seemed to lead up to this day. When one of four hijacked planes flew into the World Trade Centers north tower on September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson, a district sales manager for a data protection and network security systems company, was sitting down for a meeting. His guide dog, Roselle, was at his feet. Paired for twenty-one months, man and dog spent that time forging a bond of trust, much like police partners who trust their lives to each other. Michael couldnt see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and Roselle. However, Roselle sat calmly beside him. In that moment, Michael chose to trust Roselles judgment and not to panic. They were a team. Thunder Dog is a story that will forever change your spirit and your perspective. It illuminates Hingsons lifelong determination to achieve parity in a sighted world and how the rare trust between a man and his guide dog can inspire an unshakable faith in each one of us.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We don‘t deserve dogs. This is the story of the goodest girl, a guide dog named Roselle. She calmly led her human and others down 78 stories of the North Tower, and through smoke, dust, and debris, to safety. As he should, Hingson also uses this as a platform to destigmatize blindness. A very worthwhile read!

Michael Hingson was on the 78th floor of tower one when the first plane hit. This is the story of how he and his guide dog lived through the day. It is also the story of his life. It's hard to say I enjoyed this because of the subject but I did find it interesting. #Booked2021 #RelatedTo9-11 @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow - another interesting choice for this prompt. They are all hard books to read, that‘s for sure. 3y
Cinfhen I love reading the survival stories!! While so many perished we need to celebrate those who made it out ♥️🙌🏻 3y

Today, on 9/11, I‘m co-hosting a work book club discussion on Thunder Dog. I can‘t imagine what New Yorkers experienced on this day, 19 years ago. I can only recall my own disbelief and horror as I watched the footage on TV.

Michael, who‘s blind, escaped the north tower of the World Trade Center with the help of his guide dog Roselle. She remained calm and therefore, calmed him. Everyone should read this amazing story of teamwork and trust.

I listened to this book on audio and enjoyed it overall. It‘s the story about Michael and Roselle during the events of 9/11. It describes their day in the office and the harrowing journey to get out of the tower in time. It‘s also about Michael‘s life as a blind man and how he hasn‘t let being blind define his life.

I wasn't expecting to relive September 11th, but this book sure brought me into the thick of it. A biography of both the many accomplishments of the author's life as a blind man and a detailed description of fleeing the World Trade Center. The fact that people around the world are experiencing horrific bombings of this kind was not lost on me and brought up a lot of emotions. And then there's the guide dog! Pretty impressive work on her part.

Lucylovesreading I love this book as well. Such a tear jerker. 8y

Sometimes when I go to the library I close my eyes and run my hand along the books on a shelf. When I feel called to stop I do so and then grab the book that my hand is on. This was the book I pulled today, a true story of a blind man and his guide dog navigating their way out of Tower 1 on September 11th.

LiteraryinPA Wow. What a cool method of choosing books and what an intriguing premise! 8y

This book about a blind man and his guide dog on 9/11 #mademecry more than once. The story of how they got out of the tower is compelling and riveting, but there's far more to the book than that. There are also many moments of humor, some advocacy for the visually impaired, and a matter-of-fact memoir of the author's life so far. #septphotochallenge

MrBook Nice review 😊👍🏻! 8y
