Like a plot out of a 1950s noir film, Rail investigates the man exposed by a group of connoisseurs as the absinthe forger.
Using his knowledge of pre-ban and modern absinthes, Christian managed to blend various vintages and herbs in his own recipe that was a good dupe for a pre-ban absinthe that he bottled and sold as originals.
I learned so much about absinthe and all the legalities around the “green fairy.”

This was my final read of 2024. I was expecting more true crime, but I enjoyed the author‘s tangents about European cuisine and travel. He‘s a freelance food/travel writer so it makes sense he would shine there. A mix of history, international law, and obsessive collectors, this was a nice book to dabble in. Cheers! 🥂 💚

This is ok. Unsurprisingly, wealthy absinthe collectors are as out of touch as wealthy art collectors. The author seemed casually wealthy in a way that made me dislike him. Not a bad person, just weirdly casual. The way he talked about googling the forger‘s name, made it sound like he‘d never searched for anyone online before. Still, low stakes true crime for the win.
