It Starts with One: The Legend and Legacy of Linkin Park
It Starts with One: The Legend and Legacy of Linkin Park | Jason Lipshutz
12 posts | 2 read
From the executive director of music at Billboard, an extensive look inside the 20+ year career of mega-selling rock band Linkin Park, featuring new interviews, exclusive quotes, and insights from the band's associates and collaborators Linkin Park is one of the 21st Century's biggest, and most important, rock bands. All it takes is one quick glance at the numbers-- 11 Top 40 hits on the Hot 100 and six No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, over a dozen massive tours, 27 major award wins, 100+ million records sold worldwide, over 30 million monthly Spotify listeners --to realize that when it comes to the metrics of music consumption and fandom, there's no bigger group in recent memory. And yet, despite their enduring legacy within rock, there's never been a full, comprehensive biography of Linkin Park--until now. In IT STARTS WITH ONE: The Legend and Legacy of Linkin Park, Billboard's executive director of music, Jason Lipshutz, chronicles the innovation and influence of this legendary band, from their early childhoods to the moment their paths crossed to the genesis of their iconic first album, Hybrid Theory, and all that followed. Not only were they able to synthesize trends in pop and hip-hop amidst the post-grunge era and nu metal boom, then constantly reinvent their sound over multiple albums, Linkin Park's radically vulnerable lyrics also helped usher in a new era of artists (and fans) more open to discussing mental health and prioritizing inclusivity. Led by their front men, Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda, who balanced each other out artistically, Linkin Park never shied away from songs that put their issues front and center, for the world to see and feel. Tragically, Chester succumbed to his demons and passed away in 2017, but the music endures--and in order to truly appreciate the band's singular power to bring people together, we need to take a closer look at how exactly Linkin Park changed popular music. Through in-depth reporting and interviews, as well as new reflections from their collaborators and contemporaries, IT STARTS WITH ONE explores how one band made such a big impact on modern music, effectively cementing Linkin Park's long overdue place in music history.

Today, all I watched on YouTube was Mike Shinoda and Linkin Park and a Linkin Park tribute show. I listened to the new Linkin Park album recently but I didn‘t like it so I‘m just going to listen to the older music from now on. I tried to give their new singer a chance by listening to the new music but I like the older music better. I grew up hearing Chester sing the songs.

After I finished the tagged book that I read as a Netgalley ARC before it was released, I listened to this interview from Sirius XM that Mike Shinoda did with Howard Stern and I liked it. I feel like Howard asked all the right questions and I didn‘t feel like there was anything that I wanted to ask. I also got to hear some bonus songs I never heard before like “Lost” and “Fighting Myself”.

I‘ve been thinking about this book since I read it. I did enjoy it but I wanted more stuff to be mentioned. I wanted the Live In Texas DVD to be mentioned and I wanted the book to mention that they did a song with Busta Rhymes. I also wanted the author to mention that LP and Snoop Dogg toured together. I wanted to know what it was like for them to work with Busta Rhymes and I wanted to know what it was like for them touring with Snoop Dogg.

kelli7990 I also wanted to know if Chester was still struggling with substance & alcohol abuse during the Live In Texas DVD because he said in an interview that when he performed that he was never sober. I also wanted to read from more people in the book about their experiences with Linkin Park. I‘m okay with what I read but I think I wanted more behind the scenes stuff or bonus material but the book would have been longer than 300 pages. 2mo

kelli7990 Song to match the book review: In The End - Linkin Park & link to music video: https://youtu.be/eVTXPUF4Oz4?si=SaVBY300HMefwoPb. I watched the entire music video and I started crying. I like their music but I don‘t think I‘ll be able to listen or watch the videos without crying at least not for a while. There is a saying about time healing all wounds so maybe it‘s true. I don‘t know. I just want to know if it‘ll get easier to accept. (edited) 2mo

I started this book tonight and it‘s now 5 AM. I‘m enjoying this. I want to keep reading but I‘m going to go to bed. I‘m getting tired. It‘s a Netgalley ARC I was approved for and it‘s being published October 1.

ShananigansReads Oh I can\'t wait til this is released. I love their music. 2mo

I have a lot of Linkin Park content that I want to watch and then I want to listen to the interview from Mike Shinoda on Sirius XM. I found it on there and saved it to listen to later. My older brother told me that Mike Shinoda did an interview on Sirius XM and he played some of it for me when we were in the car going somewhere but I want to hear the whole interview. This is my TBW (To Be Watched) & TBLT (To Be Listened To) list.

kelli7990 I‘m hoping to get to all of this stuff sooner rather than later since I have the tagged book as an ARC to read. I requested the tagged book and was approved for it. I thought it would be fun to read this book and then watch and listen to this content afterwards to celebrate this book being released on Oct 1. I‘ve been an LP fan my whole life since I was a little girl and I always will be. (edited) 2mo

I saw this template on Instagram and wanted to add 4 of my Netgalley books I want to read soon. I‘m excited about these.

My predictions are:

It Starts With One - I‘m going to love this book because it‘s about one of my favorite bands.

The Witch‘s Door - I‘m going to enjoy this book.

Charles Schulz Manga - I‘m going to enjoy this book because I‘m a Peanuts fan.

Death By Misadventure - I don‘t know if I‘ll like this book or not.

Last Thursday, I watched Linkin Park‘s livestream with their new singer and last Friday, I watched the music video for their new single. I enjoyed the livestream and the new single is good. The music video is cool but it‘s just not the same without Chester. I can‘t even listen to their music anymore without feeling sad or depressed and I love their music. I‘ve been a LP fan since I was a little girl.

kelli7990 My older brother was a teenager when he started listening to LP and I was a little girl so my brother and I took it really hard when Chester died. It‘s been 7 yrs since his death. I have mixed feelings. I wish them well and I‘m happy they‘re making music and touring again but I haven‘t accepted that Chester is gone. If my brother shares LP music with me, I‘ll listen to it but other than that, I don‘t listen anymore because it‘s too painful. 3mo
TheSpineView I need to check out the new single. Thanks for the reminder. 3mo
TieDyeDude That must be tough dealing trying to reconcile the loss of a musician that's had such an impact on your life. I think the new single is alright; not something I'd rush out to buy, but a decent attempt to honor the band's sound. 3mo

The publisher approved my request for this book. This is an LP book. I‘m going to love it because I‘m an LP fan but here‘s what they said and my email back to them. Maybe my Netgalley bio should have been filled out like that to start with. Mine wasn‘t so I updated it. I‘m going to have to keep it updated if anything changes. I don‘t think the numbers are going to change because I hardly get any likes or comments on my stuff on social media.

Last night, I was on Netgalley seeing what books were on there and I saw this one about Linkin Park. I‘ve been wanting to read a book about them. I was hoping someone would write one. Someone over at Billboard read my mind and I manifested this book into existence. I‘m so excited. I have a lot of books to read from Netgalley this month but I want to read this one too.
