Patriot
Patriot | Alexei Navalny
The powerful and moving memoir of a fearless political opposition leader who paid the ultimate price for his beliefs. Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resistedand will come. In vivid, page-turning detail, including never-before-seen correspondence from prison, Navalny recounts, among other things, his political career, the many attempts on his life, and the lives of the people closest to him, and the relentless campaign he and his team waged against an increasingly dictatorial regime. Written with the passion, wit, candor, and bravery for which he was justly acclaimed, Patriot is Navalnys final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life. This book is a testament not only to Alexeis life, but to his unwavering commitment to the fight against dictatorshipa fight he gave everything for, including his life. Through its pages, readers will come to know the man I loved deeplya man of profound integrity and unyielding courage. Sharing his story will not only honor his memory but also inspire others to stand up for what is right and to never lose sight of the values that truly matter." Yulia Navalnaya

Unforgettable. A remarkable document of Navalny's work, his resilience, courage, and optimism.
Far from wallowing in depression or denial, he appears naturally upbeat even years into the prison sentence that will end in his death. While it is hard for me to follow his discussions on faith, his unflagging efforts to fight corruption, to call out lies, to acknowledge the cruel absurdities of a self-serving and censorious government 1/?

Regarding the format of the book, while there is some attention paid to Navalny's formative years, how he met his wife, where he started in his career, understandably, the bulk of this memoir focuses on the years actively involved in politics, in efforts leading up to the development of the Anti-Corruption Foundation,

A remarkable book. Brilliantly written and with great humour and insight into Putin‘s Russia & the arbitrary legal system & capricious targeting of his opponents. Heartbreaking because we see what a great leader has been lost, but inspiring & uplifting as he shows what is possible. It sounds bleak but it was so engaging I couldn‘t put it down. Also a beautiful portrait of his marriage to Yulia. Highly recommended.

TheBookHippie I agree- I gave this 5 stars. 8mo

I was hesitant about this one- i assumed it would be riddled with accounts of physical abuse. It‘s not. In fact, I finished with really liking and respecting Navalny as the positive, intelligent, curious, leader with integrity that he was. It was a life story and a love letter to the Russian people and his hope for a better world for his family. I loved it. Highly recommend!

TheBookHippie I second the highly recommended!! 8mo

A fantastic memoir of Alexei Navalny, an incredibly brave Russian who trained as a lawyer and used his education, position and charisma to expose the corruption of Russian officials and challenge Putin for the presidency. Much of the book was written in a prison cell as Navalny was arrested re-entering Russia after his recovery from being poisoned by the state. An important and moving read from such an impressive man.

Chelsea.Poole Such a great memoir. Though tough. 9mo

An unbelievable account of Navalny‘s work opposing Putin‘s regime. This is mostly a prison memoir, as Navalny was arrested reentering his beloved home country of Russia after being poisoned and nearly killed prior and recovering out of the country. He, with the help of his team, has continued to speak from his prison cell, reporting on the the atrocities such as lack of food and healthcare until his untimely death at the hands of the state. ⬇️

Chelsea.Poole I haven‘t been able to stop thinking about this memoir…everyone should read this. Especially poignant as I‘ve been celebrating Christmas with my family while listening to his lonely, ill, and cold experiences in prison left me feeling super extravagant and incredibly grateful. 10mo

Alexei Navalny loved his county but hated the corruption of its leaders, so he used his training as a lawyer to investigate that corruption and expose it with evidence on his blog. This led him into politics and eventually into challenging Putin for the presidency. This extraordinary memoir shows his humanity, humor, and love for country and family. Everyone should read this.
