Oh look, another memoir. This one about the author‘s struggles mentally and her subsequent experiences with inpatient treatment. This is one of those dual timelines, one featuring her more recent hospitalization and then everything that came before it. I was a bit unclear what dates/ages some events occurred. Much about the ways men have caused harm in many ways, plus her French bulldog. Love this cover art and title!
Whew the review describing this at 2013 tumblrcore is on the nose. The entire memoir reads as extremely young, and I really don't understand what the point of this was except to write a book. I was with AMT on her criticisms of men, but she's reading out sentences from her hospitalization records in order to dispute them and I mean damn, I feel like she's going to regret writing this when she gains a broader education about the underlying issues.
With some space and time, I think Tendler could have written a strong memoir about her journey. Now was the opportune time for sales though and the book is not fully cooked. Capitalism strikes again!
I realize that it was an event in her life that she had gotten through after she had healed; but there is a whole chapter about her dog dying that I had to skip. I had never heard of her, but it‘s decently written. I don‘t think that I‘m too sure on how the hospital stay helped her though.. I could have used more of that information.
First of all, if you read this book for dirt on Tendler's marriage and split from comedian John Mulvaney, you will be be disappointed. While there are oblique references to her marriage & divorce, he is never named & no deets are given. His absence is conspicuous. What Tendler does share is her decision to enter a psychiatric hospital for depression, self harm & suicidal ideation in early 2021. The book flips between her treatment & her history 👇
Kinda dropped all my other reading when this arrived from #netgalley yesterday. I have followed Tendler on IG for a while and enjoy her art and aesthetics.
Also curious to get the tea on her divorce from John Mulvaney. 👀
