Fables: The great fables crossover. 13 | Bill Willingham, Matthew Sturges
17 posts | 35 read | 5 to read
All nine issues of the long awaited crossover between Vertigo's two popular series Fables and Jack of Fables are collected here. The world of Fables is introduced to a whole new set of characters...The Literals. The Literals are characters that embody, literally, different literary genres such as Mystery, Comedy and Romance. One of The Literals goes by the name The Storymaker, one who can vanquish the world of Fables with one stroke of his pen. When Jack discovers the existence of The Literals and their leader Kevin Thorn aka The Storymaker, Jack must leave his own book and crossover to the world of Fables to warn Fabletown about Kevin Thorn. Does the The Storymaker plan to close the book on the Fables universe once and for all?The Great Fables Crossover features appearances from Fables favorites such as Snow White, Bigby Wolf, Rose Red, Jack Frost,Beauty and The Beast.

Ugh, I think that was the worst one so far. First of all, Jack has always been my least favorite character. Second, I didn‘t read the Jack or Literals side series because I wasn‘t interested...so this crossover is not something I was interested in. Only read it to keep up with the overarching story, but I‘m not sure I even needed to.

#ComicCoverCrush #7days7covers alternative to celebrate comics covers! Day 1

It's impossible to pick a favorite. James Jean is my favorite artist. Any cover he does is beautiful. Issue # 81 is so striking though.

Eyelit Yes!!! I‘ll definitely be posting a fables cover for one of my days! 5y

I requested this book from the library. I tried to request volume 1, but instead I was sent volume 13. I decided to read it anyway, so I jumped into this series knowing that I had missed a lot. I definitely would have enjoyed this more if I knew all the backstory. I did enjoy what I read and I liked the element of humor. If I can start from the beginning, I would give this series another chance.

parasolofdoom You'll definitely like the rest of the series! This was one of the weaker volumes IMO and takes place after the first major arc if I remember correctly. It's on Hoopla if you ever check out digital materials from the library :). 7y
Jemgirl2014 Is that a tokidoki unicorno I see? 😍 7y
ReadingOver50 @Jemgirl2014 yes it‘s a mermacorno. Half unicorn half mermaid 🧜‍♀️ 7y

Jemgirl2014 @ReadingOver50 How cute! 💙 Tokidoki. 😊 7y
Zelma I completely agree with @parasolofdoom ; I hated this volume but loved the series. You will probably enjoy reading the rest of it, but definitely start over with Vol. 1 as there are specific story arcs and character growth. 7y
Beck_42 I love volume 1 and the development of Bigby. Great character. 7y
Bengali.bookworm Ooohhh !!!! I requested VOL one! I am excited to read it!! 7y

A cool reimagining of all the fairytales, combined with the mystery of a whodunit, wrapped up in a graphic novel! What more could anyone want?

Currently, this is the funniest Fables I've read but not the best though. A lot of Bigby and Snow White, again. I also used to be indifferent to Jack Horner but through this Fables book, I've grown to love him. He's really funny. a comic relief and the most unusual story hero. The Literals are also interesting. I loved seeing the different genres personified. I would love to see a second volume of "The Literals". Over-all, it was an okay book.

So just to be clear - I've read every volume of Fables so far and have absolutely loved every single one of them - everyone should check out this comic series because it is really good. That being said, volume13 just wasn't for me - it was a crossover with the Jack of Fables spin off and honestly it may have advanced the story of that series but it really didn't do much for the fables characters! You could probably skip this and miss nothing!

batsy I love Fables! But I haven't been able to keep up with it... 7y
hlgreenfield @batsy Fables is one of my favourite comic book stories. Super well done. Well I started reading it last year so I am only making my way through it slowly. This last volume not included but it's definitely worth keeping up with - it stays good and you really see the characters develop in such believable ways ( and I've gone to check and apparently volume 14 is great again so I may read it right now in fact 😂 ) 7y
batsy @hlgreenfield You're right, the story and character development is excellent! I can't remember where I stopped, I'm tempted to go home later and reread everything, then continue where I left off 😀 7y

Completed the entire series yesterday. Loved it. Great series overall, some of the side stories I just skipped over. Jack of Fables can be completely removed. Luckily he only appears twice. His misogyny is not funny. But the base story, the main characters are EVERYTHING. SO SO good! They are what brought me back issue after issue. Highly recommended if you like comics. ❤️

I have missed Litsy, but between life and the shop things have been crazy. Also this has been a huge reason for my 'silence'...busy trying to squeeze in my 5K reading for the month. 16 books! I finished two today and may finish a third before bed. Have I told you I'm terrible at reading graphic novels? Terribly slow that is and need help knowing which bubble/panel to read next; it's obvious I'm still new to them. #5kread #NovemberReadingChallenge

sprainedbrain What is this 5k reading that you speak of? 😜 8y
LitDrivenGirl @sprainedbrain 😊 It is a reading challenge we came with it at our bookshop for the month of November. Instead of running a 5K we are reading one! 16 books because a 5K is 16,404 (and some inches) feet. One of our participants has read 13 books already! I wish I was that far. Oh and each book has to be 95+ pages or an audiobook 3+ hours. 😅 8y
sprainedbrain @LitDrivenGirl such a fun idea! 8y

I do not like this twist. The story is not the same now. Half of main characters that I cherished is now dead, another half is somewhere. 😢

Eyelit Sorry, Elena... the latter half of the series has a lot of heartbreak in store. While I absolutely love Fables... I do think it meandered a bit too long. So prepare yourself. 8y
LukkiAnn Thanks @Eyelit I will. I think I need a break from Fables for a little bit ;) 8y
