As a Special Constable, Teddy Creque is the only police presence on the remote, sun-drenched island of Anegada, nestled in the heart of the British Virgin Islands. In all his years on the job, Teddy has never considered the possibility that he might have to address an actual crime on his peaceful island. That is, until he receives a hysterical call about a dead man on the beach. Indeed, Teddy is shocked to discover Paul Kelliher, a biologist who traveled to the island every winter for research, lying dead on the sands of the islands most remote beach, killed by a single shot to the head. And when the BVIs real police task Teddy with informing Kellihers nearest kin of his death, Teddy makes an even more surprising discovery: theres no record that Paul Kelliher ever existed. Suddenly Teddys routine life is thrown into tumult as he tries to track a killeragainst his bosss wisheswhile balancing his complicated family life, three other jobs, and the colorful characters populating the island around him. Written with a wry, witty narrative voice and a plot full of twists and turns, John Keyse-Walkers Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Award-winning debut is a pure delight.

This was a disappointment. A misogynistic philanderer is the only cop on Anegada and someone has been killed, kicking off an investigation in which he does just about everything wrong and the killer reveals themselves to him rather than him solving it. And the who doesn‘t make any sense. It did give me a good sense of place, at least.

Another day, another ARC. Thanks to Netgalley, St. Martins Press & Minotaur Books. This was an entertaining mystery. I'm never sure about that "cozy" thing but I think this was a little grittier and sexier than that. Too much explaining by the author, but maybe he will improve. I'm guessing it will be a series and the end laid the groundwork perfectly for that. My favorite character was De White Rasta, a British expat turned ganga Rasta dude!
