The Winner: A Novel | Teddy Wayne

Be prepared to fully lose yourself in The Winnera book I started and then simply couldnt stop reading. Teddy Wayne has written a timely, topical novel that still somehow feels like a classic.Liz Moore, New York Times bestselling author of Long Bright River Conor OToole has never been anywhere as casually glamorous as Cutters Neck, a gated community near Cape Cod. Its a sweet deal for the summer: free lodging in a guest cottage in exchange for tennis lessons, luxuriously far from the cramped Yonkers apartment he shares with his diabetic mother. In this oceanfront paradise, however, new clients prove hard to come by, and Conor has bills to pay. Then a sharp-tongued divorce appears, offering him double his usual rate. Soon he realizes Catherine is expecting additional, off-the-court services for her money, and Conor tumbles into a secret erotic affair unlike anything hes experienced before. Despite his steamy flings with a woman twice his age, he simultaneously finds himself falling for the artsy, outspoken girl he met on the beach. Conor somehow finds a way to manage this tangled webuntil he makes one final, irreversible mistake. A dark, explosive literary thriller that brilliantly skewers the elite, Whiting Award winner Teddy Waynes unputdownable novel is cinematic, shocking, and a psychological masterpiece.

I‘m still catching up on reviews! I read and loved (but cringed throughout) Teddy Wayne‘s Loner years ago. When I saw he had a new one out I knew it would be coming home with me. The Winner is about upward mobility and tennis and sex. Wayne creates these icky male main characters who readers empathize with at first but then we slowly realize we shouldn‘t be…? Or maybe it‘s just me. Anyway it‘s another hit in my book. And the audio is good too.

BarbaraBB I liked this one too. I can highly recommend 3mo

This was fun again! A young man spends a summer in a gated community for the very rich. He gives tennis lessons and becomes involved with a mother as well as her daughter. He becomes entangled in a lot of lies.

Like Meg said, this novel reminded me of Waynes‘s book Loner. It‘s funny, suspenseful and fast-paced.

Wayne is one of my favorite under-the-radar authors. This literary thriller reminds me a lot of his book Loner, which I loved. Audio narration is 🙌🏻

Conor comes during the pandemic to live and teach tennis in an exclusive wealthy community. The richest woman there starts paying him to have the most exciting sex of his life. Unknowingly, he meets her daughter and falls for her emotionally. Trouble brews when he lets his dick do the thinking!

squirrelbrain I read the ARC of this and really liked it. 5mo

An unlikeable-man main character, Mrs Robinson vibes, some murder.. it‘s a page-turner.
