A Very Private School
A Very Private School: A Memoir | Charles Spencer
3 posts | 3 read
In this poignant memoir, Charles Spencer recounts the trauma of being sent away from home at age eight to attend boarding school. A Very Private School offers a clear-eyed, first-hand account of a culture of cruelty at the school Charles Spencer attended in his youth and provides important insights into an antiquated boarding system. Drawing on the memories of many of his schoolboy contemporaries, as well as his own letters and diaries from the time, he reflects on the hopelessness and abandonment he felt at aged eight, viscerally describing the intense pain of homesickness and the appalling inescapability of it all. Exploring the long-lasting impact of his experiences, Spencer presents a candid reckoning with his past and a reclamation of his childhood.

This memoir delves into the tortured past of a young boy who attended Maidwell. The author describes his experiences and some from others he knew there. Many of his peers did not leave the hall with their mental health intact. This book serves as a remember that you must be mindful of who you send your children to; not everyone has their best interests in mind. There are dark spaces where a variety of abuse is rampant. ⬇️

Mehso-so

Charles is an excellent writer and this is the story of his boarding school, Maidwell. It shows the misery and hopeless of his time at the school. It‘s heartbreaking. I gave it a so-so because after a while the cruelty starts to really ware you down.

Charles Spencer pulls back the curtains on the boarding school experience with his new book "A Very Private School". Recalling his own story along with his classmates‘, he starts with his early years as a child, one where he was very happy being with his family every day. But the tradition of sending your children away for school impacts him and at age 8, he is sent to Maidwell. Using his own memories, he shows us the horrors he had to face.
