Servant of the Bones
Servant of the Bones | Anne Rice
In a new and major novel, the creator of fantastic universes o vampires and witches takes us now into the world of Isaiah and Jeremiah, and the destruction of Solomon's Temple, to tell the story of Azriel, Servant of the Bones. He is ghost, genii, demon, angel--pure spirit made visible. He pours his heart out to us as he journeys from an ancient Babylon of royal plottings and religious upheavals to Europe of the Black Death and on to the modern world. There he finds himself, amidst the towers of Manhattan, in confrontation with his own human origins and the dark forces that have sought to condemn him to a life of evil and destruction. From the Hardcover edition.

Blech, not a fan. The concept of a human telling a mythical creature‘s story is similar to the Vampire Chronicles, but I was not invested in Azriel. Azriel‘s commentary on the state of society today was unnecessary. The arguing between Azriel and Gregory about who is worthy of who was annoying. I skipped the sex scene with the spirit and dying woman. Perverted. Gregory‘s masterminding was way over the top. Just not enjoyable.

Tonight‘s goal: finish SERVANT OF THE BONES. I‘ve been a little in and out on it, probably because I‘ve read it way too slowly, but I‘m definitely intrigued as I move into the denouement. I don‘t remember where it‘s headed.

Throwback to last night, when I drank a tasty (if oddly headless) beer that my guts didn‘t like as much as my mouth did. Blah.

I also finally, finally started rereading SERVANT OF THE BONES, which I‘ve meant to do for months and months. I last read it in 2001, and while I‘m only about 60 pages in, it does hold up so far. I‘m right inside it, as I always am with older Rice.

Still playing catch-up, my choice for #anditsaugust #unusualnarrators is Anne Rice's Servant of the Bones. The main character was a Hebrew living in Babylon. The Babylonian god Marduk befriends him, and this distresses his family. He is chosen as a sacrifice, to become a gold covered statue. The witch betrays him, and he becomes enslaved to the gold- coated bones of his mortal remains.

Bookwitchery He then has to do the bidding of whomever possesses his bones, good or evil. He's trying to understand what he is and gradually becomes less obedient. I'd say an ancient genii who is a victim of a sacrifice makes am unusual narrator, don't you? 7y

As long as you hate, and you roast in a hell of anger, there will be a limit to what you can do. Anger is a confusing force, and hatred is blinding.
