Where We Go When All We Were Is Gone
Where We Go When All We Were Is Gone | Sequoia Nagamatsu
6 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
Fiction. Asian & Asian American Studies. "A combination of the mystical, magical, and marvelous, Sequoia Nagamatsu weaves a collection of bold, hysterical, and moving tales into an unforgettable debut. From shape- shifters, to star-makers, to babies made of snow, the characters in WHERE WE GO WHEN ALL WE WERE IS GONE form a community of longing, of the surreal, of wonder. What a joy it is to read each and every story." Michael Czyzniejewski "Sequoia Nagamatsu's universe is one in which modern Japan and its ancient folklore play in the same delightful puddle. Creepy, unnerving, and full of heart, these tales of love and demons, death and Godzilla, loss and possibility, will creep into your dreams and enchant your imagination." Kelly Luce"

This was a fun and strange short story collection, new from the author of How High We Go in the Dark, my favorite from last year‘s #CampLitsy books.

This started with a story about a family who research Kaiju, which I thought was great. It touches on some Japanese mythical creatures and ghosts in a fresh modern way.

While I didn‘t love it quite as much as HHWGITD, I did like it a lot and would recommend it.

Soubhiville @Eyelit @alysonimagines I think both of you would enjoy this. 1y

Stirring and profoundly metaphoric way of conveying struggle with grief, failure and death in short stories populated by mystical Japanese folklore and pop culture characters.

"Place a flower in one hand and a weapon of your choosing in the other.
Go to the bathroom and stare into the mirror. Continue to stare with minimal blinking until you cannot recognize yourself.
Stare at a friend. Continue to stare until you cannot recognize your friend."

vlwelser I love the cover. 2y

Page 14, first story: already hooked. Who knew the lives of Godzilla and his pals were so complex?
