The Truth According to Ember
The Truth According to Ember | Danica Nava
3 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
A Chickasaw woman who cant catch a break serves up a little white lie that snowballs into much more in this witty and irresistible rom-com by debut author Danica Nava. Ember Lee Cardinal has not always been a liarwell, not for anything that counted at least. But her job search is not going well and when her resum is rejected for the thirty-seventh time, she takes matters into her own hands. She gets creative listing her qualifications and answers the ethnicity question on applications with a liea half-lie, technically. No one wanted Native American Ember, but white Ember has just landed her dream accounting job on Park Avenue (Oklahoma City, that is). Accountant Ember thrives in corporate lifeand her love life seems to be looking up too: Danuwoa Colson, the IT guy and fellow Native who caught her eye on her first day, seems to actually be interested in her too. Despite her unease over the no-dating policy at work, they start to see each other secretly, which somehow makes it even hotter? But when they're caught in a compromising position on a work trip, a scheming colleague blackmails Ember, threatening to expose their relationship. As the manipulation continues to grow, so do Embers lies. She must make the hard decision to either stay silent or finally tell the truth, which could cost her everything.

An indigenous spicy rom com with cultural representation? Say no more! Ember hides her tribal heritage to land an accounting job at a company. As she deals with jealous, backstabbing coworkers, she meets a hunky fellow Native IT guy who throws her career and love life for a loop in this romantic comedy.

Overall, it was fine. Enjoyable enough to keep reading, but here‘s what worked my nerves: the MC ‘clinched her thighs‘ often, not in intimate situations, just randomly clinched her thighs together🤷🏼‍♀️. Secondly, the MC and her boo had extensively detailed, specific conversations WITH THEIR EYES! I cannot. Stop the madness. However, I loved the Native American perspective, and I bet Nava gets better and better as she writes more books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ruthiella Your review was so enthralling that after I read it, I let out a breath I didn‘t know I was holding in. I‘m gonna add “thigh clenching” to my list of literary pet peeves! 😂 3mo
Erinreadsthebooks @Ruthiella 😂 The first time it showed up in the book, I thought ‘oh no, this thigh clenching is going to be a thing in this book, isn‘t it?‘ And it was, indeed, a thing 😵‍💫😂 3mo

“Most lies are harmless.

Others, however, can come back to bite you. For one Native American woman who is down on her luck, a little white lie she tells to get ahead snowballs, until the successful life she built for herself is in jeopardy.”
