One of the worst audios ever… particularly the male narrator. It definitely affected my enjoyment in f the story.

This book follows two timelines, Louie's story in the mid eighties and Noemi's story in the present day. Of the two my favorite by far was Louie's. There was mystery and supernatural happenings, mixed in with Native American folklore. I would have been happy if that was the whole book. Noemi's story was a more basic tale of grief.

Good horror stories always leave you wondering about what‘s real. Medina‘s novel does a great job of leaving us guessing. We‘re unsure whether what Louie experienced as a child was real, or whether his mental health was affected by trauma. Now his niece, Naomi has terrible troubles and his monsters are back, or are they real? A beautifully written story about our fears and how they affect our attempts to save family and friends from themselves.

Billed as a mystery, this is really more the exploration of a Native family and community and the impacts of multigenerational trauma. It follows Louie in the 80s and his niece Noemi now as they each must cope with things happening in their lives and community. I think the book is quite good, but I suggest avoiding the audio—the narrator who reads the Louie chapters is awful.

vivastory I have been really curious about Medina! 7mo
