In 2022, German American illustrator Nora Krug interviewed weekly the same two individuals over the course of a year: a Ukrainian journalist who had been born in Russia, and a Russian artist living in St Petersburg who opposed the war in Ukraine. If you want an idea about the psychological effects of war on individuals, as well as daily practical challenges, this is the book to pick up. Eye-opening and tactful. #comics #nonfiction

I find myself wishing that Putin will die. This feels bad because I never used to wish death on anyone. Now I feel such a desire. There‘s a cognitive dissonance in my head.

Very good. So much of what is available is fact-based journalism, as it should be, so to have a first hand account of the mental and emotional realities of war (as the attacked and the aggressor) was very interesting and insightful

A Ukrainian journalist and a Russian artist share their thoughts on the first year of war with a graphic journalist. The Ukrainian woman reacts by sending family to Denmark while she and her husband report from the front lines and train other journalists. The Russian man takes a more haphazard approach to trying to find safety for his family and a more passive approach to his opposition to the war. An interesting window into a frightening time.

Weekly reports from two witnesses of Russia‘s war on Ukraine—one a Russia-born Ukrainian journalist and one a Russian artist, presented side-by-side. Distressing and illuminating. The introduction is very thoughtful, explaining that this record aims to help us “understand the human cost of war” through two individual identities and experiences. It is not attempting “to portray a quintessential Russian or Ukrainian perspective.” A worthwhile read.

A little #bookhaul. I just learned of Krug‘s new work of graphic journalism (tagged) this morning and had to get myself a copy ASAP. Very excited for the Jeanette Winterson ghost stories. Might save that for Christmas break. While Idaho Slept is supposed to be “a chilling, balanced, meticulously reported true crime story.” Sounds good to me!
