The Mountain King
The Mountain King: A Novel | Anders de la Motte
7 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
This atmospheric and sinister mystery, perfect for fans of the Nordic thrillers of Jo Nesbo and Stieg Larsson, follows an overachieving female inspector investigating the darkest side of humanity, from one of Swedens most talented crime fiction authors (Erik Axl Sund, author of The Crow Girl). Criminal inspector Leonore Asker seems to have the leading position at Malms Major Crime Division within reach. But things go awry when, in the middle of a high-profile kidnapping case, management relegates her to the so-called Department of Lost Soulsthe unit for odd, cold cases banished to the basement of the police station. Despite the humiliation, Asker is drawn into one of the more peculiar cases. Someone is placing small ominous figures in town and one of them seems to represent the missing woman from the kidnapping case. As Askers investigation takes her to abandoned buildings, she reaches out to a local architecture expert and together they explore the sinister recesses of the city and discover that an unusual kind of evil lurks in the shadows.

Propulsive & creepy thriller! Likable main character with a quirky character police department which is always fun. I would like to continue on with the audio series, but I hope it‘s not the same narrator. The female voices were high pitched, childlike, and honestly kind of whiney such that it was annoying to listen to and detracted from the story.

Ooh, this is a good thriller! Written by a former police officer who has crafted a great procedural, given us an evil villain, and a really interesting protagonist: Detective Leonore Asker, who has a fascinating back story. Demoted by a self-serving colleague, Asker winds up in a sub basement with a group of misfit colleagues. Whip smart and courageous she solves a beautifully complicated case. First in a series with a cliff hanger at the end.

This serial killer thriller kicks off a new series in Sweden & features a resilient, likable detective with a past. The book opens with two missing urban explorers in search of cave rain. Leo, though initially heading up the police initiative for them, is soon regulated to a basement department of misfits. But she can‘t stay away from the case and is shocked when a basement case ties directly in! Surprises & a fast pace make this hard to put down!

There‘s a certain satisfaction in reading a well executed thriller—especially on a cold, rainy day like today (definitely a mood)—even if the story & its constituent parts are more familiar than not. A female protagonist exiled to a dead end job in the department (for reasons) makes more headway on a big case than man brought in to take over case. Urban exploration element is a good one. I enjoyed this one. On sale 1/30/24.

Starting this ARC next—the opening chapter starts fast. This will be a good one if the remainder of the book keeps up with it. 🤞

Today‘s bookmail is a Goodreads giveaway win. It‘s about a criminal inspector who is expecting a big promotion but is instead relegated to head of the “odd cases” department. Soon, however, she finds a connection to a more recent case and then things start to get really complicated. Definitely intrigued.
