"A story of pain, injustice, love, resistance, and hope, this glorious book will lodge inside you and make you feel everything. Helena Fox, award-winning author of How It Feels to Float A queer, YA Handmaid's Tale meets Never Let Me Go about a dystopian society bent on relentless conformity, and the struggle of one girl to save herself and those she loves from a life of lies Everyone hopes for a letterto attend the Estuary, the Glades, the Meadows. These are the special places where only the best and brightest go to burn even brighter. When Eleanor is accepted at the Meadows, it means escape from her hardscrabble life by the sea, in a country ravaged by climate disaster. But despite its luminous facilities, endless fields, and pretty things, the Meadows keeps dark secrets: its purpose is to reform students, to condition them against their attractions, to show them that one way of life is the only way to survive. And maybe Eleanor would believe them, except then she meets Rose. Five years later, Eleanor and her friends seem free of the Meadows, changed but not as theyd hoped. Eleanor is an adjudicator, her job to ensure her former classmates dont stray from the lives theyve been trained to live. But Eleanor cant escape her past . . . or thoughts of the girl she once loved. As secrets unfurl, Eleanor must wage a dangerous battle for her own identity and the truth of what happened to the girl she lost, knowing, if shes not careful, Roses fate could be her own. A raw and timely masterwork of speculative fiction, The Meadows will sink its roots into you. This is a novel for our times and for alwaysnot to be missed. Finally out of this horrible reading slump!
Had to find a book that I couldn't put down

I'm LOVING The Meadows!!
Queer Handmaids Tale vibes!

Took this picture this morning while doing laundry. Not going to finish it today like I wanted but definitely making progress! Quickest I've read a book in years.

Putting a pause on ACOTAR series (I just can't bring myself to start the 3rd book even though everyone says it's the best...). Hoping this one will get me out of my reading slump. Beautiful cover and it sounds very intriguing! Maybe my library 3 week deadline will force me to actually finish it 😅

I discovered Stephanie Oakes from the credits to the tv series Sacred Lies (watch it!). This new book is set in a future after the great collapse of civilisation due to climate disaster, in a new technological authoritarian society. Overall I found it a bit light and slow, but wasn‘t bad. The sci fi elements weren‘t deep but the hair transplant module was interesting. Some YA does grab me, but this probably more for the teens.

Pickpick

The Meadows is set in a future in a country ravaged by climate disaster. A totalitarian government has taken control and has created a society based on homophobia, misogyny, white supremacy and lies. The story follows Eleanor who lives in a small rural, coastal community. The Meadows is powerful and important Sapphic dystopian fiction. The Meadows is well written, immersive and heartbreaking. I liked Eleanor and her journey to self-acceptance.

While this novel started out quite slow, it definitely built itself up into an intriguing tale. Oakes jumps between the two different timelines to tell the story, revealing relevant details and events in a way that creates wonder and a bit of suspense. It was extremely effective at revealing Eleanor‘s journey throughout her time at the Meadows and as an adjudicator, along with those individuals that have played a part in her life.
