The Young Man
The Young Man | Annie Ernaux
3 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
In her latest work, Annie Ernaux recounts a relationship with a student thirty years her junior - an experience that transforms her, briefly, back into the 'scandalous girl' of her youth. At once stark and tender, The Young Man is a taut encapsulation of Ernaux's relationship to time, memory and writing.

As always, Ernaux delivers. This was a short book that really packed a punch. In it, Ernaux details her relationship with a man almost 30 years her junior.

Loved her depictions of the power dynamics and the societal double standards if the roles were reversed.

A very short book about Annie‘s relationship with a man half her age.

Society is used to this when it‘s an older man with a much younger woman, and it was interesting to see the reactions they got in public.

I have mixed feelings about age gap relationships, I can‘t imagine relating to someone in their mid 20‘s.

The writing is very good and the long biography made me interested in her other books.

“With him I traveled through all the ages of life, my life.”

Just like Free Love by Tessa Hadley, which I read before this one, this book is about a love story between a woman and a man half her age.
It is super short and yet so much better. In only 40 pages I became that woman without knowing that situation. Ernaux made me understand why she did what she did and why it mattered. And why it was beautiful. #TitlesAndTunes #Blues

Suet624 It seems as though she has now written 3 books about this same relationship. All of them good. 13mo
