9 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
What Kind of Mother mixes Southern Gothic, a missing child story, and body horror into an entertaining brew sure to inform your nightmares.Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World and A Head Full of Ghosts After striking out on her own as a teen mom, Madi Price is forced to return to her hometown of Brandywine, Virginia, with her seventeen-year-old daughter. With nothing to her name, she scrapes together a living as a palm reader at the local farmers market. Its there that she connects with old high school flame Henry McCabe, now a reclusive local fisherman whose infant son, Skyler, went missing five years ago. Everyone in town is sure Skyler is dead, but when Madi reads Henrys palm, shes haunted by strange and disturbing visions that suggest otherwise. As she follows the thread of these visions, Madi discovers a terrifying nightmare waiting at the center of the labyrinthand its coming for everyone she holds dear. Combining supernatural horror with domestic suspense into a visceral exploration of parental grief, What Kind of Mother cements Clay McLeod Chapman's reputation as a star (Vulture) and the twenty-first centurys Richard Matheson (Richard Chizmar, Chasing the Boogeyman.)

⭐️ This book started out pretty good. Once I realized where it was going I was totally uninterested. It was a stupid premise to me and an even worse ending.

Southern gothic, folk, and maritime horror. Chapman does it again, still proving to be one of my favorite horror novelists. A search for a lost infant runs awry as Madi, a palm reader (con artist) becomes involved. What Kind Of Mother would abandon a child? What Kind Of Father would bring it back? What Kind Of Mother would stay? The graphic depictions made me nauseous at times. Gory body horror & truly excellent! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #twowitches #hauntedshelf

8-19-24: My 29th finished book of 2024! I have no idea what I just read! It started off one way, woman who had a baby young and was cast out of her home returns to town with her baby now a teenager and her life in shambles. While her daughter is learning to live with her Dad, Madi is living in a motel reading palms. Then her old flame, Henry, shows up. He‘s been through major hardship and needs help finding his way. Then everything goes haywire.

GidgetsTreasures75 When I say haywire I mean insanity! I can‘t even begin to describe how weird it gets. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣2️⃣9️⃣ 4mo

What Kind of Mother by Clay McLeod Chapman is a story of love and loss nestled in a community whose gossip is as murky as the creeks that fracture its landscape.

CW: Miscarriage, animal death, child death, grief, natural disaster & more.

If you've seen my Litsy posts, you know I like weird books. In fact, I love books in which super-off-the-wall stuff happens in the service of portraying true emotional reactions. However, this novel has the first without the second. It's a changeling story, which is cool, but I don't really buy the characters' reactions. And the repeated use of the phrase "the muck and the mire" has "Hang Me Up to Dry" by Cold War Kids stuck in my head.

ImperfectCJ There's also a scene that reminds me of a line from a Beck song. The two musical connections together make me wonder what playlist the author was listening to while writing. 10mo

This was another bonkers listen, but this time in the best possible way! I had no idea where this story was going and just held on through the twisted, horrific ride. It was one of those stories that I don‘t even really know what I read but I know I enjoyed the experience of going through it 🤣. I really have enjoyed this author‘s writing! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
