Home from the Vinyl Cafe: A Year of Stories | Stuart McLean
4 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Welcome to the world of the Vinyl Cafe. Meet Dave, the proud owner of the world's smallest record store. Meet his pal, Kenny Wong, who runs Wong's Scottish Meat Pies. Meet Dave's wife and their children. Watch while they all bump and stumble through a hilarious year of mistakes, miscues, misunderstandings, and muddle. The adventures begin in December with Dave's disastrous yet inspired attempts to cook the family turkey. And they move through the seasons to the following Christmas's fiasco, when Dave accidentally spikes the kids' punch bowl at his neighbor's Christmas soiree. Home from the Vinyl Cafe also explores the tender awkwardness of first love, the challenges presented by a dying guinea pig, and the answer to the question of why a teenager would rather eat vegetables and clean his room than go on a family vacation. Whether it's the mystery of sending kids to camp, the dangers of putting up Christmas lights, or the potential for mayhem at the grocery store, in the hands of humorist and master storyteller Stuart McLean the chaotic melody of daily life is underscored by the harmonious sounds of family, friends, and neighbors. Warm, witty, and moving, these stories will walk right into your life and make themselves at home.

This. Is. Everything.

I've spent the last year reading the stories in this collection during their corresponding seasons, and this moment meant so much to me, as both a musician and someone who now works with kids herself.

It's definitely a standout scene for me. This and the turnip. 😂😂😂

Left me feeling: pleased, proud and peaceful. #ThreeWordReviews

Canada lost a master storyteller this week. Stuart McLean could spin a yarn with the best of them. The Vinyl Cafe will live on.

Found this one at a second hand shop today and had to pick it up. Can't wait to dive in. Short essays will be a great palate cleanser between other books. (Couldn't find it to tag on Litsy, so I've suggested it's addition. Proper tag hopefully coming soon!)

Just heard the sad news of Stuart McLean's passing. He interviewed me the first time I applied to the Ryerson School of Journalism and advised me to "come back next year with a big fat stack of clips." I did, and thanks to his advice they took me. Canadian Littens will know him best from the CBC. This collection includes Dave Cooks the Turkey which is a favorite read aloud around here.

saresmoore What a great story. ❤️ 8y
TheCanuckReader So sad. Saw his show live a couple of times. Epic! 8y
Tanner Very sad, indeed. I saw his Christmas concert twice, heard him read at the TO Reference Library, and saw a live show in my hometown. My niece loves listening to his CDs. He will be greatly missed. 8y
LeeRHarry My Canadian Secret Santa sent me one of his books - it is on my bedside table, in my TBR pile will now read it and be a little bit sad @lisakoby 8y
