The Portfolio Life
The Portfolio Life: How to Future-Proof Your Career, Avoid Burnout, and Build a Life Bigger than Your Business Card | Christina Wallace
16 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
What Color Is Your Parachute? meets Out of Office in this inspiring, practical playbook to achieve sustainable work-life balance while optimizing your happiness, personal growth, and bank accounts. Pouring yourself into a single full-time job is the riskiest move you can make. Your parents advice to focus on one career path? It doesnt work anymore, for reasons ranging from recessions to student loan debt, the gig economy, climate disasters, and a global pandemic (to name a few). We need a dramatically different relationship with work, one that allows us to define ourselves beyond our paid labor. The answer? A Portfolio Life. An anti-hustle, pro-rest approach to work-life balance, a Portfolio Life is built on three tenets: You are more than any one role or opportunity. Diversification will help you navigate change and mitigate uncertainty. When (not if) your needs change, you can and should rebalance. In The Portfolio Life, Harvard professor, serial entrepreneur, and self-described "human Venn diagram" Christina Wallace adapts tried-and-true practices from the business sector to help you eschew the cult of ambition and experience the freedom of building the flexible, fulfilling, and sustainable life you want. Drawing on research, case studies, and her own experience, she walks you step-by-step through the process of designing a strategy for the long haul. Because you deserve rest, relationships, and a rewarding careernot someday, but today. After all, you only live once.

It took me a while to finish this one as I went through each chapter very intentionally and working at most of the exercises. This book isn‘t only for people with physical portfolios relevant to their work, but for anyone who is multifaceted and multidimensional. Wallace tackles everything you might think of and more in order to help you juggle your many professional goals, and she takes your personal life into account as well. Continued ⬇️

jen_the_scribe The anecdotes and examples helped clarify and drive points home, adding some entertainment and intrigue along the way. This book helped me feel seen and validated in the paths I would like to take in my life, and it provided me with a guiding light to achieving some structure with it all. As someone who gets overwhelmed, I found I could breathe a little easier after having read it. I still have a lot of work to do, but I know my way forward now. 1y

My Sunny boy is thinking about building a portfolio for his life too… he‘d like 80% of his time to go to eating, 10% to sleeping, 5% to terrorizing his sister Midnight, and 5% to zoomies in the middle of the night. 🤪

“…our future happiness would depend so much more on the choices we would make every day about where to invest our time, how to prioritize an infinite number of responsibilities, and the seemingly impossible trade-offs we would need to make, than on our ability to rise to the top job in our field.”

100 sticky notes for the “100 wishes” exercise. Can you tell I‘m taking this seriously? Lol

RaeLovesToRead What is the challenge? 2y
jen_the_scribe @RaeLovesToRead It‘s just writing out 100 wishes or goals, nothing‘s too big or too small. Then you categorize them and analyze if your goals are disproportionate, for example if you have a lot of professional goals but not enough personal goals. From there, you color code them to decipher which goals are to work on now, soon, or someday. 2y
RaeLovesToRead Amazing! What do you do when the wishes come true? 2y

jen_the_scribe @RaeLovesToRead I haven‘t gotten that far lol but I imagine you‘d either maintain them or come up with new ones. Our wishes are bound to change as we do, nothing‘s set in stone. 2y
RaeLovesToRead Ooh. If I do something like this, I'd probably remove the post it note and give myself a sticker!!!! 😁😁 it's a nice visual way to set out goals. Maybe I'll give it a try 🤔😄 2y
jen_the_scribe @RaeLovesToRead Oooh that is a good idea lol and you should! Nothing wrong with a deeper look at your goals/wishes. 2y

As I started reading the first few chapters, I pretty much already knew what was going to be in my Venn Diagram, but I did the work to be sure. Upon working out my categories for what I‘m interested in, passionate about, and already working on; I discovered not only validation for my current path but whole new possibilities for creating my own opportunities. I‘m so excited and loving this book!

Late night session because I have to stay awake (have to pick up my oldest from her gradventure field trip).

This resonates so much. I‘ve studied writing, health administration, graphic design and illustration… and always felt like I needed to focus more and place myself in a tidy little box. People tend to think I‘m flakey and indecisive, but I‘m simply multidisciplinary and have a love of learning. This book is validating so much for me already…

“And after surviving a global pandemic, many younger and mid-career workers came to the same realization all at once: As much as you might love your work, work won‘t love you back.”

Only 10 pages in and I‘m already getting hit with some hard-hitting truths about the systems we‘re currently surviving in. The world we live in now is definitely not the same as the one our grandparents (and even our parents) were navigating.
