This was a fun middle grade fantasy! Nic is so excited about her twelfth birthday when her dad has promised to teach her to use the magical gift of the Manifestors, but things do not at all go as she had hoped. Instead she ends up in an an action packed adventure including magic, African American folklore and history, family secrets, and friendship. This book is definitely the setup for a continuing series.

This was a fun, action-packed MG novel, featuring African American folklore. The audio narration was a bit over-the-top for me, but I imagine it‘s pitch perfect for the target audience. It‘s set up for at least a sequel, if not a longer series, but there‘s no pub date, yet, for future books. This is my #doublespin for Southern Writer.
Not only does the main character have magical abilities, but she also has a pet hellhound with magical abilities!
I loved this book, and, hey, shouldn‘t the sequel be out by now?!
Thanks for asking @Karisimo !

Woop woop! What a fantastic middle grade fantasy! It has all the beats you want - loveable characters, animal sidekicks, kids taking on tasks way too big for them, huge high stakes. The chapters are snappy and the action is gripping. Looking forward to more in this series 😻 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Angie Thomas came to our local independent bookstore in April. She is a treasure, and I loved this book too!

This is a middle grade novel written by Angie Thomas. This book has magic, non magical people, adventure, adults being bad, magical creatures, etc.
It‘s mostly set in Jackson, MS, but they go on the actual Underground Railroad to try and find a missing item.
This was an interesting book and I really enjoyed it. The magical system was pretty cool and I‘m glad I picked this up.
A blend of the most fascinating creatures and the most dismal actions of humanity. Thomas blends folklore and American history into her novel of magic and adventure. Sometimes it worked and sometimes not.
I devoured the ARC of this new series from Angie Thomas (The Hate You Give).
Thomas is well on her way to becoming the best writer of her generation. Not many authors can swap genres, but Thomas more than succeeds in moving from realistic contemporary fiction to building a brand new world full of magic and unimaginable power. This will be the MG book of the summer. Out April 4.
