I Had to Survive
I Had to Survive: How a plane crash in the Andes helped me to save lives | Dr. Roberto Canessa, Pablo Vierci
2 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
On 12 October 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying members of the 'Old Christians' rugby team (and many of their friends and family members) crashed into the Andes mountains. I Had to Survive offers a gripping and heartrending recollection of the harrowing brink-of-death experience that propelled survivor Roberto Canessa to become one of the world's leading paediatric cardiologists. Canessa, a second-year medical student at the time, tended to his wounded teammates amidst the devastating carnage of the wreck and played a key role in safeguarding his fellow survivors, eventually trekking with a companion across the hostile mountain range for help. This fine line between life and death became the catalyst for the rest of his life. This uplifting tale of hope and determination, solidarity and ingenuity gives vivid insight into a world famous story. Canessa also draws a unique and fascinating parallel between his work as a doctor performing arduous heart surgeries on infants and unborn babies and the difficult life-changing decisions he was forced to make in the Andes. With grace and humanity, Canessa prompts us to ask ourselves: what do you do when all the odds are stacked against you?

Pickpick

This book is in two parts; the first tells the story of the 1972 Andean plane crash, which the author survived and then trekked across the mountains for help.

The second part is about how the doctor used his experience, alongside pioneering discoveries, to treat unborn and very young babies with heart conditions.

I‘m using this for #Uruguay for #readingtheamericas23, as that is where the doctor is from; it would work for #Argentina too.

BarbaraBB Uruguay! A difficult country to find books from 14mo
Librarybelle I bet this was a tough read! 14mo
squirrelbrain It was tough but in a different way to what I expected @Librarybelle. Parts of the story were told by Canessa‘s parents and girlfriend, with the second half including testimonies from the parents of the children he treated, so all quite emotional. 14mo

#3books based on a true story.
📗On my TBR, but I love the movie!
📘Interesting but a bit dense. The audio was the right choice
📙Based on the Andes plane crash in 1972, with 40 people on board, mostly a rugby team. The movie Alive is also based in the story. It's horrifying but so intriguing. The book is on my TBR.
