In Bournville, a placid suburb of Birmingham, sits a famous chocolate factory. For eleven-year-old Mary and her family in 1945, it's the centre of the world. The reason their streets smell faintly of chocolate, the place where most of their friends and neighbours have worked for decades. Mary will go on to live through seventy-five years of social change, from the Coronation and the World Cup final, to royal weddings, royal funerals, Brexit and Covid-19. She'll have children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Parts of the chocolate factory will be transformed into a theme park, as modern life and the city crowd in on their peaceful enclave. Will these changing times bring Mary's family - and their country - closer together, or leave them more adrift and divided than ever before?

If you enjoy UK history this is an enjoyable fictional read about a family put into the context of major events in England. I read this while on holiday in the UK which made it even more fun!

I‘m a real sucker for a family saga type book, so this just hit right. It follows the life of Mary and her children and grandchildren through a number of key events and issues starting with VE Day, various royal events, touching on Brexit before ending with the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic. An interesting take on what Britain is, and its entrenched challenges.

I love a good family saga and this one did not disappoint! Jonathan Coe did a nice job of telling the story of the Lamb family beginning on VE Day in 1945 and going until 2020 in the midst of COVID lockdowns. I learned a lot, laughed, cringed, and craved chocolate (thank God Halloween candy is in stores now 😆🤪🤤). I‘ll pick up his other works after reading this one for sure 🤗

If you‘ve liked Coe‘s previous novels focusing on the English, you‘ll probably like this. A social history of England lived through one extended family, starting with VE Day and ending with the pandemic.
I found it a good and interesting read, probably because I could see and hear so many of my family members playing some of these parts. Some parts made me cringe, some very nostalgic and some laugh out loud.

rockpools One day, I‘m going to have to try this. I don‘t know if it‘s my thing, but I‘m curious… 2y
BarbaraBB I loved some of Coe‘s works and didn‘t care at all for some others. So I am still one the fence about this one. 2y
squirrelbrain Great review - I‘m intrigued by this one. 2y
TrishB @rockpools @squirrelbrain you will probably have a similar reaction in terms of living through the later big events! 2y
TrishB @BarbaraBB I think I‘ve only read 2 others and did enjoy! 2y
