I had not known about ghost story reading at Christmastime!
A reread for me from a collection of Wharton‘s ghost stories, but in this single volume, the black and white graphics add to the mystery of the story. An old estate, a new heiress, and a mysterious caretaker named Mr. Jones. Wharton slowly builds the suspense - I could see this playing out well as a short film.
Billypar I always liked the line from that one carol: "there'll be scary ghost stories and tales from the glories of Christmases long long ago." Seems like a tradition that should be revived. ?? 2y
Bookwomble Definitely a British tradition, and one taken up by the BBC in providing adaptations of classic ghost stories at Christmastime. The first of this year's was a new retelling of M. R. James's "Count Magnus", which I watched followed by the 2010 version of James's "Whistle and I'll Come", starring the incomparable John Hurt. Great Christmas Eve fun ? 2y
