Enter a lush world of cataclysmic storms, planet-wide jungles, floating cities and devastating magic in this explosive new science fantasy, perfect for fans of N.K. Jemisin, Tasha Suri and Martha Wells. High above a jungle-planet float the last refuges of humanityplant-made civilizations held together by tradition, technology, and arcane science. In these living cities, architects are revered above anyone else. If not for their ability to psychically manipulate the architecture, the cities would plunge into the devastating earthrage storms below. Charismatic, powerful, mystical, Iravan is one such architect. In his city, his word is nearly law. His abilities are his identity, but to Ahilya, his wife, they are a way for survival to be reliant on the privileged few. Like most others, she cannot manipulate the plants. And she desperately seeks change. Their marriage is already thornythen Iravan is accused of pushing his abilities to forbidden limits. He needs Ahilya to help clear his name; she needs him to tip the balance of rule in their society. As their paths become increasingly intertwined, deadly truths emerge, challenging everything each of them believes. And as the earthrages become longer, and their floating city begins to plummet, Iravan and Ahilya's discoveries might destroy their marriage, their culture, and their entire civilization.

Inventive and detailed world-building make this a fascinating read, although it gets overly complicated at times. Ahilya is the sole archeologist in her society, which is dominated by the architects, who have the power to manipulate plants and keep their floating city in the sky. Her husband Iravan is a senior architect, a secretive position that has created distance between them. A gripping tale of survival, power and a marriage in trouble.

4th bookstore visited for my DC #IndependentBookstoreDay tour!

Solid State Books is a cute little bookshop in the Adam‘s Morgan district. I‘m more than halfway through my list of 6. I left my house at 8:30 this morning, it‘s currently 12:30, & I‘ve walked 4 miles already!

Next up is Second Street Books in Dupont!

This was a dense, fascinating novel and I look forward to the sequel. Rao‘s world building, and the science she created as it‘s foundations are compelling. Classed as fantasy by my Library, it‘s far closer to really good science fiction. Iravan is an architect, able to craft plants into structures. Ahilya, his wife, his antithesis, is an archeologist seeking answers to forbidden questions. They must work together to save their failing world.

TNbookworm I just finished this and really enjoyed it too🙂 1y
