SAS
SAS: Rogue Heroes - the Authorized Wartime History | Ben Macintyre
From the secret SAS archives, and acclaimed author Ben Macintyre: the first ever authorized history of the SAS 'Impeccably researched, superbly told - by far the best book on the SAS in World War II' - Antony Beevor In the summer of 1941, at the height of the war in the Western Desert, a bored and eccentric young officer, David Stirling, came up with a plan that was radical and entirely against the rules: a small undercover unit that would inflict mayhem behind enemy lines. Despite intense opposition, Winston Churchill personally gave Stirling permission to recruit the toughest, brightest and most ruthless soldiers he could find. So began the most celebrated and mysterious military organisation in the world: the SAS. Now, 75 years later, the SAS has finally decided to tell its astonishing story. It has opened its secret archives for the first time, granting historian Ben Macintyre full access to a treasure trove of unseen reports, memos, diaries, letters, maps and photographs, as well as free rein to interview surviving Originals and those who knew them. The result is an exhilarating tale of fearlessness and heroism, recklessness and tragedy; of extraordinary men who were willing to take monumental risks. It is a story about the meaning of courage.

August #BookspinBingo board is finally ready!

My #Bookspin is Rogue Heroes and #Doublespin is Bleak House.

I‘ve been reading Bleak House for what feels like literally forever (3 years), so hopefully this will be my impetus to finally finish! Rogue Heroes I have been excited for since watching the Apple TV series based on the true story of the SAS.

I‘ve got a couple others in progress already, so I‘m hoping for a good month of reading!

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Looks fantastic!! 4mo

I love Ben Macintyre- the best “story-telling historian” writing right now, in my opinion. Though not my favorite of his books, I still had trouble putting this book down. He did a nice job of raising the “how far is too far” question in terms of what they were willing to do to win the war. While in no doubt of the bravery and importance of these soldiers, you can‘t helping thinking of the old adage: “it‘s the winners who write the history.”

Another military history, the one focussing on the actions of the SAS in WW2. The key thing which I took away from this book was how unlike regular soldiers these guys were; misfits, outsiders, troublemakers whose discipline came from within rather than imposed externally, closer to being outlaws raiding behind enemy lines conducting sabotage, targeted killing and creating confusion. The template for one class of modern special forces soldier.

Good write ups of the men and soldiers behind some of the infamous campaigns of the regiment. Fascinating.

I've been in the mood for history recently and checked out this book after hearing about it at ALA (all the ARCs were gone by the time I got there, sadly). This was an interesting read about a special British unit during WWII who carried out top secret attacks behind enemy lines. This book captures both the personalities of the ragtag band of soldiers and the significance of their actions to the war. Loved it!

I like Ben MacIntyre's nonfiction style, which is really the reason I finished this book. The kind of hyper-bravado requirred for SAS service is not the kind of story I'm most interested in. (Dinner: sweet potato & chickpea soup & leftover greens gratin) #bookanddinner

If I had a better attention span at the moment, it would be an unreserved Pick. It is still a Pick, because what I did manage to read yielded lots of interesting quotes.
