The Man Who Fell to Earth: The Official Movie Adaptation
The Man Who Fell to Earth: The Official Movie Adaptation | Dan Watters
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
An all-new, fully-authorised graphic novel adaptation of the cult 1976 movie starring David Bowie and directed by Nicholas Roeg. This book includes a gallery of never-before-seen photos used to illustrate an exclusive feature on the making of the movie. Also included is a bonus section showcasing the development of the book itself. The film, based on the classic science fiction novel by Walter Trevis, sees an extra-terrestrial called Thomas Jerome Newton (played in the movie by David Bowie) land on Earth in search of water to save his dying home planet. Using his advanced scientific knowledge, Thomas becomes incredibly rich and uses his wealth to search for a way to transport water back to his home planet. But as his mission on Earth drags on, Thomas becomes seduced by the excesses of our world and desperate to return home unaware he has become a target of interest for the U.S. Government and a sinister corporation, eager to exploit him. The all-new graphic novel also features exclusive bonus material including a 10-page article on the production of the original film illustrated with dozens of rarely seen on-set photographs. As well as cover concepts, character designs, a script to art section chronicling the development of the artwork, and a reproduction of the original movie poster.

2 ⭐ This graphic novel is a rehash of David Bowie‘s first movie by the same title. This movie was originally a book from a few years before the movie. This comic book claims to go past where the movie ends and provides more ending to the story. This was an interesting read. It is about a man who falls to earth purposefully, because there is no longer water on his planet, and he must find water and get it back home to his family.

LibrarianRyan However, he falls first into the lust of earth, both drinking and sex, and then once people realize he‘s not human he falls into scientific lab hands. He never makes it home. This is an odd little graphic novel and the story. I guess I‘m just a sucker for happy ever after which you do not get in this book. What I found much more interesting was the back matter all about the making of the original movie along with the still pictures from the side. 2y
LibrarianRyan The artwork is nice and the storyline OK, but when your extra material is better than the rest of the story that‘s not a good thing.

Pickpick

There's nothing in this for me to not like, so an entirely subjective and probably unreliable 5⭐ rating, which, despite the foregoing caveat, I'm prepared to fight you about, your choice of weapons ⚔️
Pramanik's illustrations faithfully capture David's likeness, thankfully, as anything less would have ruined it, and while it's a naturally simplified version of Roeg's multilayered masterpiece, is still a satisfying story in itself. ⬇️

Bookwomble I really enjoyed the mini-filmography at the end, containing loads of behind the scenes photos. Fully deserving of its shelf space 🧡👽🧡

The_Book_Ninja I‘m sure it‘s sacrilege to a Bowie Stan, but haven‘t they re-made this into a mini-series? 2y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja They have. I haven't seen it as it's on Paramount+, and who has that? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm open to adaptations and sequels, it all depends on how well they pull it off. I like that each episode is titled from a Bowie song, so that's a good start 😊 2y

Leftcoastzen Lovely photo! 2y
Oldschool_millenial Dug through your history to find this just to comment: have you seen the new DB movie "Moonage Daydream"? Saw it last night, and enjoyed it, even though I was never into DB (don't judge meeee!), so I figured an avid fan would enjoy it all the more 2y
Bookwomble @Oldschool_millenial I haven't seen the film, unfortunately. It wasn't showing near me. I'll hope to catch it when it streams, or when it's released on disc. I'm glad you liked it - no judgements 😁 2y

My visit to the library was a stopover on the way to the bookshop to pick up this delicious morsel... Yum yum yum! 😋📖👽

vivastory I still need to watch this movie. Also, gotta love the bookish detours on the way to the main book destination 👏 👏 2y
psalva Ooh! That looks cool. I‘ve yet to see the movie, but I definitely need to. 2y
Bookwomble @psalva It is 😎 and you do 😄 The movie rewards repeat viewings. My kids don't know it yet, but they're getting me the blu ray for Christmas😁 2y

Bookwomble @vivastory Yes, you've definitely got to see it 😊 I popped in to the newly-relocated local Waterstones bookshop, too, just to have a look around as I hadn't been in since it opened, but I was good and didn't buy anything! 2y
vivastory I'm impressed by your restraint! Waterstones is the biggest chain bookstore in the UK isn't it? It seems like they used more clips from Roeg's movie in Moonage Daydream than from any other movie he had been in & Roeg's Don't Look Now is def a favorite. 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Yes, they're a huge chainstore, and not a bad one, but I prefer to buy from my favourite indie 😊 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Tenuous link, but I went to school with the brother of the child actor in Don't Look Now. 2y
vivastory Really? That's awesome. I'm a bit surprised that looking at IMDB she was only in 1 other movie. Sutherland's filmography at the time is the complete opposite with 3-4 movies per year including a turn as Homer Simpson (!) in an adaptation of Day of the Locust 2y
