The Birds of Opulence
The Birds of Opulence | Crystal Wilkinson

From the critically acclaimed, award-winning author of Blackberries, Blackberries and Water Street comes an astonishing new novel. A lyrical exploration of love and loss, The Birds of Opulence centers on several generations of women in a bucolic southern black township as they live with and sometimes surrender to madness. The Goode-Brown family, led by matriarch and pillar of the community Minnie Mae, is plagued by old secrets and embarrassment over mental illness and illegitimacy. Meanwhile, single mother Francine Clark is haunted by her dead, lightning-struck husband and forced to fight against both the moral judgment of the community and her own rebellious daughter, Mona. The residents of Opulence struggle with vexing relationships to the land, to one another, and to their own sexuality. As the members of the youngest generation watch their mothers and grandmothers pass away, they live with the fear of going mad themselves and must fight to survive.Crystal Wilkinson offers up Opulence and its people in lush, poetic detail. It is a world of magic, conjuring, signs, and spells, but also of harsh realities that only love -- and love that's handed down -- can conquer. At once tragic and hopeful, this captivating novel is a story about another time, rendered for our own.

Man I loved this book. Even if some of the stories felt unfinished, the overall story of the book was done. The characters were fascinating, the scenery was lush and real, and the prose was just perfect. I honestly had a hard time putting it down once I had started.

The story centers around several generations of women in a small southern town. There is life, love, loss. 👇

callielafleur I read this for Wiley Cash's new book club, called the Open Canon Book Club. You can go to his website for more information if you're interested. There will be a live discussion on this pick on September 26 at 8pm EST. 6y

This story is a powerful look into the lives of women, mothers, daughters and friends. It‘s an intense, rich family saga in a mere 199 pages. It contains themes of love, loss, strength of family, tragedy of family and strength of community. One of the best books I‘ve read. Thank you Open Canon Book Club & Wiley Cash! Wonderful first book pick!

Wiley Cash, who himself has written done amazing books about the American experience, has started a book club called the Open Canon book club. It sounds like an amazing idea, and if the first book choice (the tagged book) is any indication, there will be some great books on the list. Here's the link to the information:
