Book 53 of the year.
Calling all #skeletoncrew #scarathlon team members! @AnnR has created a bingo board for cosy mysteries for October. I know we have some people on the team who aren‘t too into dark horror, so you can match any cosy light mysteries you‘re reading to the picture prompts and get points for the bingo lines and for each hour you read (counting it as a readathon).
The tagged book is one of my all time fave cosies if anyone wants a recommendation 🎃🎃🎃
Cute cozy that is probably the strongest start to a series I have read in a while!! I will for sure be spending more time with Yale and Celine!
Cozy mystery set in West LA. The amateur detectives are 2 Cantonese cousins: Yale and her visiting cousin Celine. Cute easy read with some recipes at the back.
I love a good cozy mystery with a foodie setting and this new series seems like it will deliver everything I like - interesting characters with engaging back stories, food to drool over, and a familiar-to-me setting of West LA. Some of the back stories seemed a little forced in the telling, but there‘s enough there to have me putting the next one in the series (to be published in June) on my ginormous TBR. 🧋

Lots I liked here so overall a pick! I loved the ‘world‘ of the night market and how clearly I could imagine the food, the families and the culture of a city I‘ve never been to. The mystery was fun but the main character was almost so ‘not like other girls‘ she wasn‘t believable at all. I just found a 20-something living in modern LA with no idea how phones or the internet worked because she‘d rather be reading Jane Austen a bit much.
I have always enjoyed cozy mysteries...like rom-coms, they are a nice escape from reality. This one is the beginning of a new series and while I liked it some, I didn't really connect with the characters as I wanted. The mystery itself was okay, although in keeping with the cozy part, the actual biology of the manner of death was skipped over. It is getting good reviews from others, so it may be just me in this case. I gave it 3/5.
