Elizabeth Hardwick is a prime example of a seemingly extinct species - the general essayist. Reading through the wide-ranging pieces in this book, it's incredible to realize that she was still writing into the mid-90s, when such things already felt anachronistic. It's a cliché to talk about the shallowness of online discourse, but reading an expansive mind given the time and space to make insightful connections across a broad and disparate range👇
