This 16-hour audiobook was an investment but totally worth it imo. Pork production is huge in eastern NC and back when I lived there, I dated a man who studied air quality around lagoons of their waste. This book is about the people forced to live around those smelly pits and the lawsuits they brought against Smithfield and other industry titans to improve the conditions for themselves and the pigs. Reads very Grisham-y but is true! 👍🏻👍🏻

This was an amazing book. Reads like a thriller even though you know the good guys win. So many villains. Loved it. P 111
He presents as a man at home within himself, whose waters run deep but whose surface is no less real.

My only experience in this particular area of NC hog farms is driving through, so I really can‘t imagine hearing hogshit hit your roof like rain or the cesspool lagoons being feet from your property. We hear “farms” and think Old McDonald; instead, it‘s corporate kings that bring in billions. This was an excellent story of David taking on Goliath, and I highly recommend. I paired the audiobook with this library copy to finish out this chunker. 🐷

The story and people in this book are 5+. The writing was a little verbose (but I loved the quotes to start each chapter). Enthralling legal thriller about hog farms in NC and those that live close to the farms. I don‘t see myself purchasing Smithfield Farms products until I forget this book.

Am I testing fate by taking this library book out on the boat? Yes, yes I am but this story is absolutely riveting and I cannot put it down.
