I‘m not TOADally (see what I did there?) sure how I feel about this one…it was a slow burn, and depressing. The first half kept my attention but it faltered as I went on. Just…different. (28)

A quick depressing read about a depressed woman following a mental breakdown. She‘s a hermit & you‘re in her head going through memories & I‘m still not sure if they‘re fond or cringey memories for her. The prose is exact & lovely. The memories range from sad to horrific. Her friend Sam who changes his name at will & poops in the woods … ok I‘ll stop talking about it … it‘s just so weird! I liked it! Tag me if you read/review it!

So I liked the spine. A spine buy. Then I found out this is from the demented mind that wrote Geek Love … so yeahp it looks like this might be a good one! Anyone read it? Chucked on my quarterly MBR …
This book is going to be a difficult one, I can tell, but her prose is stunning. If you've ever read Geek Love and enjoyed it I think you'll like this one. She writes about the absurd and grotesque, so she's not for everyone. But this entire page just struck me as really powerful.
The photo is bad, I realize that now.

While this is not Geek Love, there's a certain beauty in the bleak, brutal writing. Toad is a slow-moving look into Sally's life as she navigates her way through a wide range of situations. This read is depressing and Dunn doesn't shy away from some pretty grotesque descriptions about bodily functions and personal hygiene.
The sadness infects all aspects of this book, but Dunn's writing is superb and unforgettable.
