The best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Road returns with the first of a two-volume masterpiece: The Passenger is the story of a salvage diver, haunted by loss, afraid of the watery deep, pursued for a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longing for a death he cannot reconcile with God. Look for Stella Maris, the second volume in The Passenger series, on sale November 22nd, 2022 1980, PASS CHRISTIAN, MISSISSIPPI: It is three in the morning when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wetsuit and plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His divelight illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the crash site are the pilot's flightbag, the plane's black box, and the tenth passenger. But how? A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit--by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul. Traversing the American South, from the garrulous barrooms of New Orleans to an abandoned oil rig off the Florida coast, The Passenger is a breathtaking novel of morality and science, the legacy of sin, and the madness that is human consciousness.

Another book I really hoped to like but ultimately found disappointing. McCarthy is a beautiful writer. I have page flags all over the place marking passages I loved. I will still read more of his books (I haven‘t read most of them, and I gather that this one is pretty atypical). However, this one was a very long example of masterful writing that left me scratching my head. Nothing is explained or resolved, and I‘m not sure what the point was.

Chelsea.Poole Awesome photo! I felt pretty much the same about this one. 2y

Book 1 of 2023 complete. I‘m not quite ready to dive into book 2 in the series. I wasn‘t super into this one and need to think on it a bit first.

One pie mention and a confusing meandering plot. Overall, I liked Bobby Western but … I have no idea what was going on with the plane crash. Very odd book. Reminded me of that book from last year about all the physicists. #TOB2023 #GriefCategory #ReadICT

BarbaraBB I liked last year‘s book but I fear this one! 2y
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - it is just odd. Probably a “me” problem. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Hooked_on_books I found this one quite dissatisfying. I will say, though, that if you found the sister character interesting (I did), then Stella Maria is far better. 2y
BkClubCare @Hooked_on_books - I probably will read that. Thanks! 2y

Esther says, “Sure, I will pose with the dang book.” I started with the eBook from Libby, then I got a notice that my hold from the library of a physical copy was due for pickup. Yep, large print! 😁

7% into the audio and I‘m already confused. I love, and I hate, Cormac McCarthy. We‘ll see where this one takes me.

Also, I didn‘t know there was a sequel.

54% and I'm calling it. I didn't like The Road, and this one, although it seemed promising (and I like that it mentions tardive dyskinesia), appears not to be going anywhere. I'll have to try All the Pretty Horses and give McCarthy one more chance, but it's possible his novels just aren't my thing. #tob2023

EmilyM I loved The Road and I bought this one, but the reviews have me intimidated! Is it really philosophical? 2y
ImperfectCJ @EmilyM I didn't really find it philosophical. Maybe self-consciously clever? It has detailed conversations that have little to nothing to do with the plot between characters who sound so much alike that it's tough to distinguish between them. The only reason I considered finishing was because the second book apparently delves more deeply into the storyline I found most interesting. 2y
BarbaraBB You made it to 54%… I am dreading this one 2y
BkClubCare I can‘t wait for this!! Woot!! (Nevermind, just being contrarian- I loved The Road and loved Old Country for Old Men…) 2y
